Alright, I really like both of these marine/war films and I was just wondering which one you guys thought was better.

Both are great, but my vote goes to full metal jacket because of all the good quotes.

They're both such different movies, but I have to give to nod to FMJ because of R Lee Ermey's mouth. |

FMJ was a great drama, and amusing in its own right, but Jarhead hit far closer to the reality of military service. My vote goes to Jarhead. FMJ is an easy civilian vote, but anyone in the forces should be won over by Jarhead due to its brilliant portrayal of the petty bullscheisse of military service.

I think Jarhead was a more emotionally intense movie because it came from the perspective of an actual Marine. You're not just observing this Marine-you're living his experience. Full Metal Jacket definately won points for immersing you in the amazing boot camp scene, but the movie's realism and depth drops dramatically when they hit Vietnam. I think FMJ really lost its focus on the soldier and became just another war movie halfway through. So I'd say as movies go, Jarhead is the superior. As far as which one was more memorable, I'd go with FMJ just because I'll never forget the boot camp. |
