Isn't terminal velocity the highest speed a given object can reach while in a vaccuum? (optimal conditions, no resistance, space for instance) Therefore, as soon as it hits earth's atmosphere, wouldn't it encounter resistance and thus start slowing down?

My point...how can you slow something down to terminal velocity?

Terminal velocity occurs when a free falling object reaches a net acceleration of zero. It's the balance between the falling force and resistence. Objects in space can exceed what their terminal velocity would be in our atmosphere. It's not a constant because it can change with resistance and gravitational pull.

Also, zero-gravity isn't what makes astronauts float in space.  It's the centrifugal force caused by the shuttle orbiting the Earth.

Centrifigul force would cause them to stay ON the shuttle, not float off into space. Centrifigal(sp?) force is the pull applied to an object in rotation, not too unlike gravity.

We covered almost this exact same issue in another thread... it was a while ago.
But yeah, when you're in orbit you're just falling the entire time, and the shuttle is falling with you, so it seems as if there is no gravity.
Centripetal acceleration is the force that is required to keep something in orbit. Gravity provides the centripetal acceleration. It is a force toward the earth, not away from it.
Centrafugal force is the equal-but-opposite force to centripetal I belive.

There's no such thing as centrafugal force. It's a term people use to describe that it feels like something is pulling you towards the outside of a turn but in reality it's you just continuing in your previous course.
