hi everyone. i am a 100 percent total noob to this, i've only
plsyed s couple times and im totaly hooked, i've decided to buy
my own gear and start entering comps as i've been told i've got
the tactical mind for it. ok, first stupid question. Why do some
hoppers have batteries? i dont get this. also (by the way i'm
buying my gear off the net cos i live in australia and its pretty
much the only way to get it here) i've noticed on the net that you
can get CO2 tanks or nitrogen tanks. whats the difference? and
can you just use air in a CO2 tank and simply use and air
compressor to fill it? oh and one more thing. is there a differnce
between any paintballs that i buy? or should i get whatever is
cheapest to save money?

thanks for help everyone

Motorized hoppers feed faster and more consistently.

C02 tanks have liquid C02 in them. This is filled via a big tank (mother tank) which can be rented from a welding shop. Fields and shops almost invariably have the capability to fill C02.

Nitrogen is a gas, not a liquid (at least not in paintball terms) The tanks hold between 3000 and 5000 psi depending on the tank you buy, and the more pressure in the tank the more air can be fit in the same space, and you get more shots. Tanks are measured in terms of the air they can hold (a 68CI tank can hold 68 cubic inches of atmosphere) Based on my last point, a 68CI/3000psi tank holds less shots than a 68/4500 tank, even though they are the same size. 3000 psi fills are easy; Scuba tanks and the right adaptor (yoke) are used to fill up to 3k. 4500 fills are generally achieved via a compressor, which are ungodly expensive (3 thousand US dollars and up) so many fields and shops do not have them. 5k fills are very rare.

Almost nobody fills true nitrogen anymore, and instead it's just air that is compressed and dried.

C02 tanks and HPA/nitrogen tanks have different valves, so you couldn't fill a C02 tank with HPA. Even if you could, it can hold very low pressure and it would not be worth it.

Cheap paintballs have bad shells, bad fill, bad consistency, and are generally bad. It is not worth it to shoot the cheapest paint you can find. I recommend middle to high end paints, these being Xball Silver and Gold, All Stars, Hellfire, Inferno SFX, Anarchy, etc.

first question: some hoppers have batteries because they have a agitator arm inside that force feed paintballs into the gun so that you can shoot fast.  this is only needed if you have an electronic or a response trigger so that the hopper can keep up with the high rate of fire.

second question: co2 tanks and nitrogen tanks are different.  co2 is a refrigerated gas.  its downsides are that it is slightly inconsistent (without a stabilizer), and its efficiency is dependant on the climate.  the warmer it is, the more efficient.  nitrogen, n2, and HPA are all the same thing.  it is a tank which holds compressed air.  HPA tanks can be filled with an air compressor if it has an output pressure of 3500 or 4000 psi depending on your tank.  HPA is very consistant and efficient, but the tanks are very expensive (about $200 for the cheapest good one) and they are a tad more expensive to fill.  check with your local fields to see what the fill.

question 3: with paint, you get what you pay for.  stay away from anything made by brass eagle.  it also depends on who your buying from, and if they took good care of the paint, and that its not stale.

if you have any more questions, dont be afraid to use the search button if its a common question, if you cant find anything then just ask.  you can PM me if you'd like.

thank you very much for all that.

just let me get this strait. you CAN simply use an air compressor
to fill a CO2 tank with air. see i already have an air compressor
so it would be so much easier and cheaper if you could.

No. Since when do air compressors output liquid C02?

They can;t fill HPA tanks either, because they don't have enough output pressure.

sorry im a noob im getting confused hehe. so you can fill a
nitrogen tank or a HPA tank with compressed air then?
MilSimBaller you seem to think they're the same thing, does
that mean i can use my air compressor to fill either a nitrogen
tank or an HPA tank?

A regular air compressor that you use to fill tires / other inflatables can't fill a HPA tank. Regular compressors can fill somewhere around 250psi.

Nitro / HPA tank refer to the same tank.

CO2 tanks are different from HPA tanks. You can't fill a CO2 tank with 3000psi of air. also, you can't fill a HPA tank with CO2. Technically is possible, but it's dangerous and shouldn't be done.

no no i have a high pressure one, dont worry about that. so as
far as i now know you can fill a nitrogen tank with plain and
simple compressed air.

if yuo have an air compressor that puts out enough pressure...ie 3000, or 4500 psi

awesome. and does compressed work just as well as nitrogen?
are there any positives/negatives to using plain air as apposed
to nitrogen or CO2

Also make sure that you have an adapter piece on the air compressor that filters out moisture.

compressed air...and nitrogen...are one in the same my friend...when one refures to nitrogen or compressed air...it basically means the same thing...so all in all nitrogen IS compressed air...

lackymac, what do you have a high pressure air compressor for, and what is its exact output pressure?

I highly doubt you have one meant for high pressure applications. There are very, very few uses for them.
