Is a bad thing.
Summation of the story: Average GPA's in schools go up, but average knowledge goes down. I've been calling this one for a long time now. Schools are fluffing the grades so bad now-a-days. Even from where I went to high-school, a select cult of kids pretty much did nothing but make sure they had a 4.5 or higher, an ungodly high amount. It was just downright silly. When you have 10 people in a class of 40 (I went to a small school) with a 4.0 or higher, some into the 4.5 range, your scale is off. Make the work harder, or make it count for less. Whenever I would bring this up around them, and some of them even still to this day, they get super defensive about it. They insist they "earned" that 4.3 GPA. It is nothing but a title game. "Honors" and AP classes are no more challenging than standard classes, but you can get a ton more weight from it. The whole grading/GPA system is borked, and we are continuing to raise a generation who thinks that because of the number they earned in high-school they are actually intelligent. I see it here all the time. People that claim they graduated with a high 3 GPA, yet seem to be academic probation after the first semester and flunking out of everything. Now, class, discuss this amongst yourselves... |

I graduated high school with a 3 because I got really lazy after freshman year.

I think the system of grading we currently use in high school is inherently lame in and of itself.
For the most part, it measures a student's willingness to work hard rather than true intelligence. But whatever, I agree with Whale. |

The point is to get a high gpa and get into a good college.
Who the hell cares what you learn or not. If you don't get a high gpa, you are just an idiot or blatently don't care because it is not really a challenge.. |

In the end, that's all that matters. Would you hire a smart guy that is not willing to work hard? I sure wouldn't. But a guy that is not as smart can still put out a good product and if he is willing to put the effort in. I would rather have the not-so-smart person than a genius working for me. Intelligence is also important, but that should show after you're hired. The will to work is why we have progress, not just smart people. |

AP's aren't more difficult than regular classes? You're right... it only means taking college courses in high school...

High school classes are easy, i (somehow), just do the homework, pay a bit of attention in class and get a 4.0, but when people dont try, like, for instance, to do a report, you had to do everything in steps, this kid was too lazy to get a paper signed, just signed, so he failed the quarter because he wasnt allowed to move onto the next thing.

I get decent grades. I'm in a few honors classes that I get A's in, but it doesn't affect my GPA that much. I got a 3.37 last quarter with minimal effort on my part. I think that's about right.

i think i have around a B with an honours course. i don't try my hardest, but i do homework, and if there is project that is worth like half my grade, i usually try and do it...i don't understand why kids just blow that off, as long as you do it, and follow the instructions, you are pretty much garenteed at least a 70..which is a lott better than a 0.

I tend to agree. But as it ties into the topic, people are having to put less and less effort in, and are getting more and more back grade wise. |

It's all part of the era of entitlement. I'm sure everyone here knows the fellow student/coworker who feels that they should get top grades/pay just for showing up without actually having to put forth any effort. After all, we wouldn't want to hurt little Jonny's feelings by telling him that his complete lack of a work ethic resulted in poor performance would we?

If it's that easy to get great grades, think of how easy it is to just get by. If you just plain dont give a crap but are relativly intelligent you can not do homework ever and pass on tests alone. I'd be willing to bet more than half of the NHS overachieving cult turds have dropped out when faced with actual work. Our salutorian's new plan in life is to stop takin her pill so she can force he woman-beating boyfriend to marry her because having kids soves relatinship problems.

in my school, the GPA system isnt too messed up. im in 3 honors classes out of a possible four and taking spanish band an PE and have A's in 4 out of 7 classes. one problem is that i have to actually study now. the honors classes are actually different from the regular classes so us smart people are actually learning something.

I disagree with the statement that honors and AP aren't more challenging. At least in my school, they are MUCH more challenging. My AP US History class is the toughest I have EVER taken. It has so much work to it, and we get overloaded with so much information. Everyone in my class is in the top 40 out of almost a class of 500, and ever WITH the AP weight the average GPA in the class is a 3.9.
Now for honors, I think it depends on the teacher. I've had honors classes easier than regular classes, and honors classes almost as hard as my AP classes. It really depends on the school, making a generalization doesn't do anything. |
