I got a 98c Pro that I am planning to deck out. What should I get for it? As of right now I have a scope mounted on it and everthing else on it is stock (But I still whoop every one in my path lol). What barrel should i put on it and what extras should I add on? I am second in command for the Huntsville (Texas) Team Spartans. My position is right wing. Thanks!

I've been sitting here a full 5 minutes trying to figure out the best way to put all of this. So, I'm going to be frank with you.

First off, from the 9 other posts you and your friend have put up, we understand that you play for some "team" which has named itself the "Spartans" and that you are from Huntsville, TX. You don't need to include that in every post as all it really does is make you look like a complete tool. You're talking to a forum filled with people who play PSP/NPPL/CFOA/NEPL/NCPA paintball on established and very very good teams. Throwing out that you're on a "team" does little to improve your image in the collective mind of the forum. Rather, it hurts our image of you and those you associate with which makes us less inclined to help you with whatever matter you are seeking assistance with. That said, I'll get to the root of your question.

As far as how to upgrade your '98, there are many different paths you can go down depending on what it is you want your marker to be able to do. If you want to play "army" and deck it out in mil-sim bolt-ons to get the military look, you're going to need a stock, some form of gas-through/expansion chamber "magazine", a barrel shroud, etc. If you want to improve the performance of your marker rather than looks, you'll need to look at upping your rate of fire by installing either and E-Grip, R/T, or E-Bolt. In conjunction with any of the afore mentioned firepower upgrades, you'll need to procure a hopper that will feed fast enough (at the minimum you'll need a 12v ReVLution hopper), you'll need to either upgrade to HPA/N2 for your air source, or invest in a Palmer's Stabilizer reg or a very good expansion chamber to keep liquid CO2 out of the marker's valve. Eventually you may want to look into a Low Pressure Kit (LPK) to improve consistency and efficiency.

The most important upgrade you can make whichever path you decide to go down is purchasing a better barrel. LAPCO and J&J make the best barrels for the money out there. They're both usually under $45 for a single barrel and are amazingly accurate for the price.

I hope this helps you get an idea of what you want to do with your marker.

QFT X100

Nobody cares that someone assigned you some imaginary "legendary" rank. It holds no value here.

Also, you both have been called out on your poor spelling and grammar a few times not yet you have not put any noticeable effort towards improvement. Even little things such as minor spelling mistakes and capitalization make it harder to read. By not even making the effort to do a simple once over of your post, you are representing yourself and your team badly. Spending 10 seconds to make your post easier to read is only fair if you expect us to help you. Showing effort on your part will definately help you get more and better help.

To start you off, you should edit your origional post and replace it with this:

My position is right wing and my rank is legendary (That's the rank he told me). I am working on getting another marker for speedball but for right now, we are more or less woodsball and urban. Thanks!

And that's just basic spelling and grammar.

Yeah I thought that rank didn't exist. I would switch to HPA or N2 but I don't think that any place around here refills that. I've also heard that N2 is pretty expensive. Is HPA cheaper than C02? What should the size of the barrel? The nearest place that sells gear and equpiment is Academy in Conroe. Oh and I'm looking for performance rather than looks. Thanks for the feed back.

HPA is the same as N2. And HPA is usually cheaper to fill than CO2, but the tanks cost more.

Best barrel size is usually around 12", not too big that its going to impede you while playing, and not so small that you can't press into bunkers (if playing with inflatables). If you want to go smaller, the smallest you should get is between 8-10", and the largest being 14-16"

To piggy back on Jerseypaint's post. 14" will give you a nice balance between the sound-reducing capabilities of the porting in a barrel and maneuverability as well as efficiency.

My suggestions for barrels are the J&J Ceramic (one piece, two piece, or kit) and the LAPCO Bigshot.

I think the barrel I have on it is 11 or 12" but isn't very accurate over about 40 yards. The barrel will probably be the first thing I upgrade.

Most aren't.

I've found that most barrels share the same effective range but their accuracy between that range differs a lot. (though there are a lot of other factors contributing to accuracy)

Yeah. Should I keep that scope on it? It really doesn't help much except for scouting the land. It's small and not very noticible and black. It's power is 4X15. Oh and what's a good hopper for this gun? I currently have the stock hopper it comes with and one of my friends gave me an electric VL Quantum, both hold 200 balls.

Unless you go electronic, any electric hopper will do.

Scope is up to you.

If you're on a huge tract of land, you can keep the scope for scouting and such if you like it. Otherwise, get rid of it if it gets annoying or in your way. As for hoppers, anything is fine for you now since its stock. Try the VL if you want for now, or just use the stock gravity hopper.

The only real use I've ever found for scopes on paintball markers.

I've been looking at the upgrades for my marker on this website and wanted to know if i should get a stock for it. I'll use the VL for speedball but I'm going to need another nonelectric hopper for woodsball. Can I really go wrong when buying a nonelectric hopper?

Stocks are a matter of personal preference.  I've used a solid stock, a collapsible and a folding.  I hated the solid stock and the collapsible was annoying, but I really like the JCS folding stock I have on one of my markers.  (It feels more solid than the collapsible, yet can be moved completely out of the way to the side of the marker.  The only drawback is that with it folded to the side it interferes with dropping the hopper for squeegeeing.)

If you use a stock, you also have to consider what you will do with your tank.  I run CO2 off of an x-chamber screwed into the vertical adapter on the 98C that is stock equipped and that works fine for me because I detest remote lines.  A tank will sometimes get in the way if mounted to a standard ASA while using a stock.  Additionally, a tank at this location defeats the purpose of collapsible/folding stocks.

You do have several tank mounting options:

  • Remote line.
  • Reverse mount the tank (Hawaiian style).
  • Vertical adapter (with or without x-chamber).
Regarding the hopper question:  If you have the stock non-electric hopper that came with it, there is no reason to buy another gravity fed hopper.  If you don't, you could use the VL quantum, but the noise might be annoying.  (That is the one that runs continuously I believe.)

If you decide to get a better hopper, consider getting one that would do double duty (speedball and woodsball).  I am very fond of the ricochet hoppers.  (The fact that the switch is tripped and the balls are stirred practically every time the trigger is pulled means they actually feed quite well for cheaper low-tech electric hoppers.) However, if you plan on eventually upgrading your Tippmann to a "super-gun" you may want to avoid purchasing a hopper that would require later upgrading/replacement.

The hopper question is best answered after you determine future firepower upgrades.

What's the advantage to having barrels that are 2, 3, or kit pieces?

The various "backs" to barrel kits are necessary for the greatest accuracy possible as the match between paint size and bore size is what governs about 50% of the accuracy issue. The different inner diameters (I.D.) of each back to the kit means you can find the best fit for whatever paint you are using. The 2-piece part of barrel kits comes from the need to be able to swap backs with a smaller number of tips, keeping the cost down and allowing the user to select from a wide range of lengths to meet their needs.

Cyclones are great, if you want what it is they provide. They are a pneumatic system that uses otherwise wasted gas to cycle the loader after each shot. They have the benefit of battery-free operation over electronic loaders, however they cannot cycle quite as fast as the best electronic loaders without considerable upgrades (and even then, it may not be possible). However, the cyclone can cycle faster than 15 BPS stock, and it is fairly easy to get a cyclone over 20 BPS. This is faster than most people need to fire their marker, if their marker is capable of doing so.

This marker is what I'll be using for woodsball. It's a 98c pro ACT Digi camo with a 12" stock barrel, stock drop forward, stock Doubble trigger, and a scope I put on. That'll give you an idea on what it looks like. As I said I'll be using it for woodsball but the gun just can't keep up with how fast I'm shooting and now frequently jams. We'll play anything for regular woodsball to hard core woodsball (hard core does exist right? My friend said that's where meleeing is legal).
