I'm looking for a good all purpose knife. My current knife doesn't hold an edge very long and after 5 years of faithful serves, needs to retire.

This would be an all purpose knife, hunting/fishing/general outdoors/self defense, all that jazz.

Fixed or folding doesn't really matter to me, just not serrated. Too hard to sharpen. Looking in $40-80 range. I have heard good things about KA-BARs.

Any info would be great. Thanks.

I am getting a KA-BAR for my Birthday.

I currently have a $1 knife from walmart. It honestly works pretty well for what I usually use it for.

I have a RAT5.

A RAT3 or RC-3 would be pretty good for general use.

I rarely have the need to use a knife other than to cut a steak.

Frosts Mora knifes they are Swedish army knifes
Cheap but very good quality. Can be picked up for 15 bucks. Make sure you get the Stainless Steel one.
You can hammer them into a tree and stand on them if needed, easy to sharpen and hold an edge well. And if you lose it, who cares its cheap.

I've always been pleased with Gerber knives.

ee, no fuller?

I have a Smith and Wesson SWAT folding knife. Good all purpose knife, and easily fits in a pocket.

Personally, I like Kershaws. I just bought a smooth bladed, locking Kershaw from Dick's Sporting Goods. I suggest going to your local sporting goods store and going through all of the knives in the display case till you find one you like.

I would have double edged the blade, as it is it is more of slashing/cutting instrument than a stabbing tool.

i like swiss army knives. not so much for defense but i can just as easily hit someone with a fist full of keys as i can fight with a knife...

also if you get a knife with serrations down on the bottom half you can grind it away and have nice blade geometry. cuts very well while pulling.

Boot knives = garbage. They always get in the way and are a pain in the ass to draw. Get yourself a good Field Knife. Ka-bar sized.

I to have the S&W swat knife, I got the serrated back one and I am kind of
regretting it, but other than that it is a great knife.

Boot knives are great and they aren't a pain to draw at all. They are the best fighting knives too- double edged, and they are really easy to pull if you set the strap around the blade right and make sure the clip is tight. You don't even need to put the strap around the blade really, it doesn't go anywhere. And if you only carry it as a fighting knife, most people file down where the blade meets the handle so you can snap off the blade once it's in. Definitely not a good all purpose knife, but that's not really what they are designed for, and I wouldn't get one for what you plan on using it for. They aren't the best quality, and they don't hold an edge for that long because they really don't have to. But, back on topic,  I have a KA-BAR and I love it for the stuff you plan on using it for. It holds a decent edge for a good amount of use.

Gerber Paraframe 2

That's the knife I carry. They make that knife in several sizes, with and without serration. It is a great all-purpose knife for daily carry.
