So I receantly purchased a Springfield Armory M1 Garand and for some reason there is a serial number on the bolt. Can anyone explain what this means? My friend says it's indicitive of a re-issue, but he's not 100% on that. The rifle looks to be in great condition, the wood and the park finish both look amazing, but the finish on the bolt looks worn. The firing pin, extractor, and ejector pin all look fine though so I'm thinking it's safe to shoot, I'd just like to double check.

Could I ask how much you payed? A lot of weapons have serial numbers on numerous parts. If all numbers match up you have a "matched weapon". I'm sure someone else has more knowledge than me. I only have a K98.

It was $900, a little expensive but everything functions just fine and the finish on the wood and metal are in match condition. The barrel is amazing for something that saw action, the rifling is still there and still deep. |

You made me get up and get my M1 to check.
As impulse stated, if it's a matching number to your receiver, then it's original. If it doesn't match (mine doesn't, although it's also SA) then it's been worked on at some point. Any idea how old your rifle is? You can check here Mine's a 1955. Got it in pretty decent shape... traded a really beat up IBM M1 Carbine for it. Edited by ShortyBP - 05 February 2008 at 10:08pm |

Enjoy that gun, they're a blast to shoot. I'm left handed though. So I flinch near the end of each mag because when it ejects it always pops me in my face

My buddy has had one for a while and I overused it, he was thinking about selling it to me, so I bought my own. It was made in April of 1943 shorty and no the numbers don't match. The one on the bolt looks etched in so I'm thinking it's the number from the gun that the bolt was taken off of. The number matches that of a garand made in july of the same year. As far as enjoying it goes you can count on that, and I've never had the en bloc clip hit me altough I'm sure it'll happen sooner or later. One thing I'll never do is slam my thumb in the receiver.

Right now I cheat and use two hands to reload. When I brought the rifle to show my uncle, who is all of 5'2" and hasn't handled a Garand in almost 50yrs was still able to do it without hesitation. Me... I'm still a wimp.
If you're eligible... best place to get ammo is through CMP. You probably already know not to use commercial 30-06 with it due to the pressure curve. I'm hoping to get set up to reload soon... although the HXP that CMP is selling can be had for less than the reloading components. |

I picked one up a few months back for $500. Its a shooter more than anything even remotely collectible. The guy I had look at it told me that it was a collection of parts basically.
Its a great rifle, but I need a new operating rod. It's got a pretty serious bend to it. ![]() |

Hey reb, since its beat up there is no harm done re-blueing it and re-finishing the wood. Where as doing that to a nice M1 will hurt the value.
