Yet again, I have been screwed by the cops.
Driving down to my girlfriend's lake house with her parents in one of their cars and me in the other, we drove the three hours south to Smith Mountain Lake.  On the way there, there was a random sobriety checkpoint.  They said, sir, your registration is out of date, to which I replied, "I had no idea, this is her parent's car".  He said, "It's your responsibility as the driver"...which I say nothing to because I'm appalled.  I'm 17 and he's being a douche.  I had no idea their car wasn't registered.  He gives me a summons...but tells me I can pay the ticket and re-register the vehicle, and if I send proof, I probably won't have to appear in court or anything...THREE HOURS AWAY FROM MY HOME.

Done and paid for as of May 30th.  I get a letter today requesting that I appear in court...on the 29th...**edited** .  My girlfriend's parents paid the fine and re-registered their vehicle.  Why on earth would they send me a summons when everything was taken care of

In short, I loathe both cops, and our horrible court system.
Now I've got another thing to take care of...

most the time i side with the cops, and they are partially right. as the driver of any vehicle you should know where the registration and insurance card is and if its up to date. god forbid there were an accident

however, i wouldn't see a need to go to court, they should've just given you the summons and what not, have you send in proof and send you on your way.

It's not the Cop's fault that you got the summons, that's our discombobulated court system. As for the ticket, he was just doing his job.

I've never had an officer ask to see my license or registration going through a checkpoint; just a hello, how are you, and where are you headed. If you can pull off not sounding drunk, you're free.

If the driver is suspicious, they just tell them to pull over into another lane where you are assaulted by a swarm of cops with unnecessarily bright flashlights and only then will they check papers and test the sobriety if need be.

I just don't think I should go to court; I sent an e-mail to the sheriff's office, and I'll be calling tomorrow.  The only reason I care is because it cuts into beach week...and srsly...a court summons....

Why exactly did you get screwed by the cops?

Why was he being a "douche" for doing his job?

Sounds like just another case of teenage anti-cop angst.

Maybe if some douche bag 17 year old wasnt suckered into driving his girlfriends whore mom's gas guzzling unregistered rig because he thought he was going to get a peice of arse, said cop could have been out doing something more important with his time. Ignorance of the law is exactly that. Ignorance. Grow up.

I feel real, physical pain to have to say this, but I agree with Carl!

It's hard to side with either party in most situations (between police and civilians).  Police harassment and brutality are still very alive and well.  However, I just so happen to believe the majority, of any given population, are just as low as the "big bad policeman".

It's not just cops that are on a power trip.  It's everyone these days.

I've been pulled over twice in the past 2 weeks. Once for passing too close to other cars, and once for blowing a stop sign. Both times doing 10 over.

Both times off with a verbal warning.

I love my technique for getting out of tickets

(Nothing perverted...)

agentwhale: I detect sarcasm correct?

Linus: I doesn't count if  you know the cops who pull you over.

Actually, Impulse, I do not. I know no Fort Worth cops personally. Never met any of those patrol officers that pulled me over.
