Yes, I realize this is old, but after watching the latest keynote, and staring at my iphone for the past five minutes trying not to wire a bomb inside it and sending it to Steve Jobs, I've just decided to write this.  Thanks for turning a 10 year + apple loyal into a pissed off and betrayed "bitter ex".

See you in hell, Steve.
See. You. In. Hell.

It's the principal of the matter. How can you charge 700 dollars for a product when it first comes out, then drop it down to 200 dollars less than a year later? It isn't right. At least with people that bought into the HDTV hype when it first came out were compensated in some way.

Not only is the whole deal kind of BS in the first place, but you get jiped either way. You either have an outdated phone that you payed way too much money for, or you get a new one, and have to pay EVEN MORE on the plan cause now it has faster internet.

Dude - Apple lives on hype.  That's what they sell.

Of course they charged a zillion dollars for the iPhone when it came out, despite having less functionality than older and cheaper devices, because their customers don't care about functionality.  Their customers care about snazzy interfaces and sexy commercials, and having the newest kewlest thing on the block.

Same with their PCs.  Their boxes do less than what other people's boxes do, but do it prettier and look cooler, so they charge more.  And don't even get me started on iPods...

Apple is an impressive company.  They have managed to convince millions of people that overpaying for sexy-looking products with generally average performance is a good thing.  More power to them, but not for me.

It appears you have taken the red pill.  Welcome.

Yeah...I waited for four years before buying a video iPod.  I still have it after three years, but it's time to upgrade, it looks like hell.  They do say that everything electronic is outdated in four years, and I believe it.  Never, ever, buy something first generation.  Look at the 360, PS3, anything.  Just keep your iPhone until you need a new one, by which point it'll be cheaper and even better.
My treo does just about everything the iPhone does, and cost me $200 brand new...and unlike most people who buy smart phones, I actually use my features.

Agreed 100%

Even though we do have a lot of Indie listening, hipster Mac fanboys on this site who will disagree. (Had to do it )

Any background on this particular case? What is wrong with your iphone?

See, it would be fine if they kept the prices relatively the same.  But now that they are only $200.... Thats more than the Ipod Touch...which i have, and I could of payed $100 less and used it as my phone.

I honestly cannot fathom how this can come as a shock to anyone...
From the moment the iPhone launched pretty much everyone knew that this
would happen (which is why I've waited to buy mine). Also, I don't
understand why a company you are "loyal" to releasing
an improved and cheaper product would offend you so much. Would you
prefer it if they came out with a crappier, more expensive version of the
iPhone?

Same here.

But I must say, I have no regrets about buying my Ipod Nano (2nd gen). In the year and half that I have had it I have had not a single problem. Even though i have used it in weather exceeding 110 degrees, dropped it a few times, and got it wet once, it still functions like new.

Brand 'loyalty' is dumb anyway.

I think they purposely extended the timing of this release compared to the timing of improvements on other products.

Basically, their strategy is to get people to replace their computers more often than one would if he could upgrade his own hardware. They want you to feel out of date/fashion almost immediately. With Macs, you can't buy the future standard in specs without giving them a ton of money, so it's inevitable that you will feel out of date sooner than you'd like.

They extended the update on the iPhone because early adopters will be more inclined than ever to buy the next version. Had they done it a few months sooner, those people might not have been willing to ditch the old and buy the new.

In the end, it's more money for them... and I'm all for that. People just need to be aware that their business strategy is based around false hype and consumer tension.
