This week my 13 yr old nephew witnessed in his school a "beat in", ear marks of MS13. . I can't drive too many places without seeing some gang sign, recently I was in Weaverville NC, and what is sprayed on a wall, MS13. I have been curious how we can combat these cliques/gangs? What are your thoughts and opinions?

Seriously, you need to. MS-13s are vicious. The true sects down here and in Mexico are sworn to kill any cop they come into contact with, and they have been known to behead rival gang-members or people that mess up around them. I knew some ridiculously (I know I overuse this word, but in every sense of the definition, I mean it now more than ever; think guns, tasers, knifes, etc in their possession at all times) tough guys in high school, and ALL of them knew not to mess with the MS-13s. Again, move. |

Ah. Home invasion thread. Gotcha. I live in a quiet peaceful suburban neighborhood. Used to live a dangerous city neighborhood. Moved as fast as I could. Obviously moving isn't always an option, but I think many of us are too inertia-driven and don't give enough thought to more extreme solutions - like moving. Gangs are no good, and MS13 is really really no good. There frankly isn't much you can do, except maybe join the gang yourself. Hence the best suggestion I can offer is "move". |

abandon the community because of them? or remove them from the community? I too live in a suburban neighborhood. I have crips, bloods, latin kings, H.A., P groups, the like within my quiet suburban neighborhood. No matter where you go, they will be there soon. So, what should a community do about this? Live it to them and get the hell out?

Electrify every metal surface in your house before you go to bed and when you leave the house. Just don't forget about it the first few times, I guarantee you won't forget ever again.

Well, I figure it depends in large part on whether you have a family or not. Do you have some moral duty to aid your neighborhood, and generally improve society? Perhaps. Depends. Is that duty dwarfed by your moral duty to protect your children from harm? Without a doubt, in my opinion. I would uproot and move far, far away if needed to provide safety for my children. And gangs most certainly are not everywhere. Some parts of the country are obviously more infested than others, but there are plenty of safe areas, even in large cities. I don't mean to be flip, and this is obviously a very difficult situation - but I do think that "move" tends to get discarded far too quickly. |

so do nothing and leave is your best answer, Susan. Ace, if I were to abandon my home, and booby trap it, there would be a lot worse than electricity waiting for the fool who roles on in.

Leaving is quite different from doing nothing. Leaving is taking drastic measures to protect yourself and your family from harm. |

"Sir13s" are seriously no joke. I hung out with plenty of people that were in gangs and stuff in high school, and up until 10th grade I had a friend or two in S13.
Sir13's were seriously the most brutal gang member's I ever came into contact with. Even as VERY young teenagers(12/13) they were more than willing to go through a brutal initiation where they had to beat someone up, and then be beaten themselves by the members of the very gang they were trying to join. As to how to solve it? Good luck. That's like telling two countries to just get along. |

Based on what I've learned about combating gangs, is that they seem to crumble apart when their leaders are taken out of the equation. When I say 'taken out', I mean dead. Under cover agents spend years working their way into gangs to collect evidence and prosecute them. But if you ask me, its a bit of a waste. Even from prison, gang leaders still have quite an influence. Usually they only end up dead during some sort of public fight/shoot out with another gang which results in civilian casualties. Theres really no easy solution. |
