Ok guys. Here goes a HUGE post. I have a Tippmann MODEL 98. My dad bought it from a guy at his work. Came with gear and two 20 oz. Co2 Tanks. Below is everything the gun came with. * Note, this is a MODEL 98, not a 98 CUSTOM! Yes, the older model is a beastly gun.
Tippmann MODEL 98
Heres a Picture As you can tell, it is in GREAT SHAPE. Everybody I showed the gun to thinks it is in the best condition they have seen. This gun is 8-10 years old! Ok, I was thinking about getting a new Tippmann. I can't decide on whether to keep my current gun and just to ask for new gear and stuff. Or I was going to get one of the following options. Tippmann A-5 Tippmann 98 CUSTOM ACT Edition Of course I am going to get upgrades if I get any of the options. If I got the 98 CUSTOM, I would be able to get more upgrades, I was going to get the Flatline Barrel, Double Trigger, and stuff like that. If I got the A-5, I wouldn't be able to get as many upgrades, but I am getting,"More bang for my buck?"And overall I want to cusomize it, but yet I want to stay on a lower budget. 98 CUSTOM = More Upgrades A-5 = More gun, less upgrades Keep Current Gun= High Quality Gear Here is where I need everyones thoughts and Ideas on what I should do. wow man. i think you have a pretty good deal on your hands right there. my opinion i dont think its necessary to upgrade to the new 98 customs. the a-5 is cool, because of the cyclone, and maybe the trigger swaps. its always cool to have a mechanical as backup. but if you were to buy new maybe checkout something electro. (or the a-5 with e-grip or response trigger) i guess that would work too. u have 1 flatline. i wouldnt get another if you were buying the a-5. but again, my opinion. ive got a lapco bigshot apex ready. its awesome with and without the apex. have a happy christmas. do lots of research before u commit. |

Ya, thanks for the advice. I did get a very good deal on this, I had to pay my dad for it. Um, the only bad thing about this flatline, it does not screw on like the new flatlines. It has a clamp that goes on it and as you can see, it has a whole rail on it that goes all the way to the backend sight. For some reason I can get the flatline off, but I cannot get the clamp off, so that means I can't attach any barrel but the flatline because it is a flatline clamp. Is it a bad thing that I can only use a flatline, or should I just leave it on for good. I might be able to get one of my local paintball stores to get it off for me, but is it worth it or should I just leave it on for good? And it came with a stock barrel, but what is an apex? Apex is a barrel and it has 4 type of shooting mode like left hook, right hook, drop shot and long flat trajectory shot.

You have to loosen the body screws for installation/removal of the clamp. |

Sorry for the double post, I am on different Computer so it wouldn't let me edit my last post. I took the screw completly off the clamp, it wouldn't budge. Roweazie, I couldn't get that website to open. |

Like Mack said, you need to loosen the bolts that hold the body of the marker together in order to be able to screw the clamp out. If you are looking at a new marker, I wouldn't get another 98. Go with an A-5 or something new. It seems silly to buy another 98 and put a flatline on it when you already have one. |

In some cases, if it has taken hits and paint has been allowed to dry in/around it or some knucklehead loctited it in (seen it) you may actually have to separate the body halves and clean out the threads as well. Since you are new to this a word of warning about separating the body halves. Do it on a light colored towel (that you don't mind possibly ruining) that is placed on a large workspace over an uncluttered non-carpeted floor. The towel will keep small parts from rolling off and the floor I specified will make it easier to find dropped parts. Be aware that there are several parts under spring tension inside the marker so separate the halves carefully. (Keep your hand on the end cap as you take the marker apart.) The "basic paintball" sticky at the top of this page contains further hints for taking markers apart. |

YES!! Thank you guys, I got the clamp off by loosing the screw on the gun. I didn't even have to take it off. I got the clamp off and I was able to put my factory ported stock barrel on. Thanks alot guys. The threads really needed to be cleaned, they was green with stuff on them. I got all that crap off any now the gun looks sweet Edited by Blafferty10 - 01 October 2008 at 5:47pm |

You should have taken the opportunity to open up the marker and clean the insides as well. If there is paint/debri buildup where the barrel screws in, you may have more inside the marker. It is very simple to do and should be a regular part of maintainance. If you don't have the manual for it, you can download it at www.tippmannparts.com. |

There's nothing much that tippmann offers currently that you don't llready have within your 98.
Maybe look out of tippmann for your next marker? |

I am kind of looking for an electric marker maybe. Remember, this will be my second gun so not anything expensive. Maybe a 150 dollar gun. And if I do clean the inside, how long will it take to take apart and put together, this is the first time I have ever done this. If it is difficult, I will just get a paintball store to do it for mefor $5. Edited by Blafferty10 - 02 October 2008 at 4:44pm |

Willing to buy used? You can't get very far with $150 even if you buy used.
You have owned it for ten years yet never cleaned the insides? |

No, I bought it from a guy at my dads work. I bought it about 2 weeks ago. This gun has only been used one or two times, and that was about 3-4 years ago. I was thinking about getting a Smart Parts ION, I know it is more than 150, but not much more. |

Oh...
Well the ion is a decent marker but you can get a lot better for a little more. Keep in mind that you will need hpa/an electric hopper for anything much better than a tippmann. |

Ok first off, do the electric guns run off of Co2, or compressed air?

Depends on the marker but as a general rule, compressed air (the really low end ones such as e-tippmanns and spyders would work fine on co2)
