So, here it is, your earth-shattering revelation. There IS indeed something I don't know. Are you ready? Are you sure you want your world to be rocked? Are you absolutely certain that life as you have come to know it won't end if you see what it is??????

So, the missus and I are going ice skating for the first time in 15 years. I never skated much as a kid, but add in 15 years of not doing it and I seem to have forgotten one very important thing. How do you stop? Aside from falling on your ass, running into someone/thing, and I'm not even going to try a hockey-stop thankyouverymuch. Simple, easy to use instructions would be nice.

And I used to wonder why people hated ginger kids so much.

balance on one skate and put your other foot horizontally at the back of the foot with your weight on it making a T. Just make sure to have the blade you drag behind your foot with the weight on it.

Drag the back blade across the ice

Outdoor or indoor?

If it's indoor, it's easy, just hit the wall. If outdoor, do the V thing.

Thank you!!!! That's how I used to do it. I couldn't remember if I dragged the whole blade or just the tip with the little saw-edged portions.

And all my American friends told me it was dumb to have Canadian buddies online....

I do a few really tight turns until I HAVE to lift my foot. By the time I gain my balance, I am stopped.

You can make the T style stop, or you can do a very similar thing and just run the nose of the rear skate behind you.

It doesn't stop you quite as fast, but there is less chance of it ending up in a splits. While it does obviously work better with figure style skates with the teeth on the front, there is nothing stopping you doing it with hockey style skates.

Good luck, and remember to enjoy falling over. It is part of the fun :)

i do a little 360 to stop.  im not really sure how i do it, i think i just put one skate slight in front of the other then turn really sharp with it and turn not so sharp with my rear skate.  maybe.  all i know is that i do a 360, and then i am not moving anymore.  ive only skated like twice so thats the best i can do.

When I was growing up, hockey skates were rare in my town. All they rented at the rink were figure-skate style skates. I had my dad's old pair from the 1960's.

Exactly what I was going to say. I used to have a skating rink in my yard when I was a kid, good times.
