I'm writing a paper for school about healthcare systems. And I figured I'd ask you guys what you think of the Canadian system and what you think the pro's and con's are.

Thank ya much Smile

I love it. We were discussing this in chat yesterday actually. The pros are huge, the fact that I can mangle my arms somehow, go to a hospital and be fixed right up without handing over a penny. I'd hate to be bleeding at the reception and be turned down because I dont have insurance, or its not covered, or because my credit card is maxed out. In terms of cons people in the states like to insist that theres long lineups but personally I have never experienced that in my many hospital visits.

Being an american, im dumb and uninformed. But here are some downfalls as i can see them:

-Higher taxes, the people are paying for the system right? This isnt really a big deal to me because we already get taxed out the butt anyway. Some would consider it a huge burden though.

-The lines for procedures (not ER visits). I think that the wait times people refer to are not time from getting to ER to time getting treated in ER but rather time that you need surgery vs time you actually can get scheduled for a surgery. Again, i know it will depend on the procedure and the time of year and a million other mitigating factors, but there could end up being a long wait. Or you could get your surgery the day you go in for it. It all depends as far as i can see.

-Less money in the medical field? Hospitals making less money leads to doctors, nurses, administrators and other employees salaries dropping. Could lead to less desire to get into that field, or to go to school and move out of the country to a more lucrative one.

Honestly, i just made this stuff up off the top of my head, but i think it could make sense. Need to hear from a real live canadian to back up or refute anything ive written though.

Good luck.

Niq, those are valid points, but personally I am fine with our taxes, especially if its going to healthcare, as I know its something I can and will use, consistantly. Again, I haven't dealt with the lines, so I cant really comment much more on that I suppose. And for less money, originally doctors feared that socialized healthcare would ruin them, but now most agree its the best thing to happen to healthcare here. And yeah, there are some docs who just want the boats n' hoes, and they find a way.

Actually low salary is what made my mom (an RN) move us to the U.S. She was promised a pension and didn't get one. Now that she works in the U.S. she has never had to work a night-shift. The pay is a bit better here too. BUT, since some retards screwed up the economy, they got rid of the pension at the surgery centre that she works at. So It doesn't matter much if we move back

I'm American, and I always heard that anything in the medical field = job security.  Not true, the hospital that I work at is one of the only ones in Michigan that hasn't done lay offs yet.  Due to people losing their job (and their insurance) they aren't as likely to go the hospital.

Now, if the US had a system similar to Canada's, I wouldn't be worrying about losing my job.

-Taxes: Better to pay a bit of extra taxes than the bills to treat something like cancer.

-Lines: Though the lines for the er are probably actually better in Canada from what I hear, I believe you are generally correct about lines for procedures. I haven't experienced this myself.

-Money: Still just as desirable to get in though some do leave the country. Not sure about the ratios of our doctors leaving vs yours.

It's pretty good.

One time I cut my finger to the bone, waited 4 or so hours before even being in the room to get stiches.

Another time, I put my handle bar into my leg, Showed the lady at the desk while she was taking my info and not even 30 minutes later i was stiched up and ready to go.

it all depends on the urgency.

thats what scares me. if you cut your finger to the bone, and wait a few hours it could get pretty badly infected...i guess theres a list of some sort that says whats more important than other things though

I actually had a class about healthcare taught by a canadian, and he said the wait times for some procedures in Canada are 6 months to a year long and he knows people that come to the states just to get their surgeries so they can get it done quickly.

Because the doctors that are employed by the government are the best?I'd rather have a doctor that puts a little more effort into their job than say a DMV drone. The whole pay for performance thing makes a difference.
