Does anyone have an experience using Adderrall XR? I was prescribed it today by my doctor and I'm a bit worried that it's long half life will cause problems with sleeping?

Drugs will effect everyone differently. Take it as prescribed and if that is keeping you up have the doctor change doses.
This is a question you ask a pharmacist. Thats why they're there. Edited by You Wont See Me - 29 April 2009 at 4:54pm |

Based on friends experiences, just take it at the same time every day and make sure it is early, right when you wakeup or are eating breakfast.
Try to keep a consistent sleep schedule. |

Ya my doctor told me to take it as soon as I wake up and to skip the dose it if I wake up at noon or later. I was just conserned because I already have insomina, and my doctor knows this. My guess is he is trying to use the adderall to keep me up and moving during the day so I can sleep better at night (which I've already texercise daily so I don't quiet follow his logic).
He's a man of few words so he rarely tells me exactly what he is thinking/planning. I know this isn't a good quality in a doctor but I've been to 4 others who all sucked and, quiet frankly, I'm tired of this "doctor shopping." Either way, I'll be back in his office in 7 days to discuss effectiveness, progress, and the like.
On the plus side, he also prescirbed me some benzo's to take at night if I am still feeling "buzzed"/awake from the Adderall.
P.S. Addy XR doesn't come in a generic (not till 2018 or some time close to that) and this **edited** costs almost $7 a pill, it better friggin' work miracles!

Most doctors tend to go one way or the other. |

Benzo's are commonly used to come down off an amphetamine buzz, such as coke, meth, or adderall (which is just a 4 ampetamine salts with/without their steriosomers) so I can see why he would prescribe them. The adderall (particulary XR which contains an amphetamine salt that has a half life of 13 hours) caught me off guard.
I'm going to make the (risky) assumption that he's a doctor, and thus went to medical school, and therefore: he has a much much larger knowledge in this field than I ever will.

Missed this line before. I typically do try and ask pharmacists questions and sometime I get good answers but, more often than not, I get halfassed answers. The one time I asked if this medication was going to have life threatening reactions with cheese and other stuff containing thryosine, he proceeded to take the piece of paper that they give you with every presciption and read it to me....Needless to say my question was never answers.
I seem to always have the worst luck with doctors/pharmacists/veterinarians
My father baught me a PDR, however I forgot to bring it to school with me. If I had it then I could find these answers myself.

Go go a local pharmacy where they actually have time to answer your questions and aren't so busy that they consider you a hassle. Pharmacists at places like Walgreens or CVS just don't have the time usually to really take care of a person. |

HIGH VOLTAGE:
My neurobiology class has treated me well so far, lets see what else I can recall to answer your question:
Cocaine/meth are CNS stimulate that FLOODS the synapse with dopamine/serotonin/norepinephrin, which inturn almost constantly stimulate the next door neighbor neuron (cocaine goes so far as to go backwards into the nerve cell and open up more channels, so that more neurotransmitters are released even without a stimulus).
Benzo's bind to the GABA-recceptor on CNS neurons, and increase it's affinity for the neurotransmitter gamma butrytic acid (GABA) (sp?). This makes more GABA bind to the GABA-receptor, when this happens it hyperpolaries the cell (via potassium influx). All in all, this makes the nerve slow its function down a LOT.
So with all this dopamine/norepi/serotonin swimming around and stimulating the nerves, the benzo's go around (and stick around for a long time) and slowly "turn the neurons off." And thus, you lose you "come down" much quicker.
If you find my answer unacceptable then I suggest you Google it. I'm sure you'll find it out there somewhere. It's a common practice among meth/coke users.
MBRO:
It's a very long story, but it will suffice to say that I had the displeasure of spending a huge portion of my time with a veterinarian whom I absolutely CAN NOT stand. Every minute around him made me want to pull one of those "murder-suicides" that I see on TV.

If you take it too late at night, it'll definately affect your sleep.
I used to take Adderall when I had tests to take. It definately gives you a boost in enery/focus, but it mae me jittery as hell. Don't smoke it. |

i took an adderall once to assist me in a late night drive. i woke up for class one morning, drove to friends school after class. picked up some friends and hit the slopes until 3am when i made a 3 hour drive home. I found that I felt... awake. i didnt get drowsy the entire time, didnt lose focus, and also didnt feel tired until about 10:30am when i crashed and went to bed.
you can take from that whatever you want. |

The XR shouldn't stay in your system for more than ten hours. It's less effective than the regular, but it will work.
Don't forget to drink and eat, though. And stay off the alcohol if the adderall is actually really necessary for you. Once your liver starts malfunctioning the adderall goes permanently. |
