Inspired by some posts in one of the healthcare threads, I decided to get my gear together and take inventory.  Increasingly, lately, I'm becoming more and more dissatisfied with modern life, and the direction we're all heading, and I've really been thinking about existentialism and the like.  I don't think we're going to see any kind of governmental/societal collapse, but it's always fun to talk about what we would do in that case, and there's no harm in being prepared, I guess.

Here's the stuff I'd take with me if I had to life off the grid for awhile. Pretty much the same stuff I take camping.  This isn't the complete list, it's just a start. I'd like to include some basic fishing gear, a sheet of Tyvec, a couple tarps, and some clothes. Ruger 10/.22 would be nice to include.

Here, I have plenty of flint, steel strikers, and char cloth. In one of the tins, I have cotton balls soaked in Vaseline for tinder. It's possible to light them aflame with burning char cloth. Strike anywhere matches coated in paraffin, knives, oilstone, honing oil, tobacco pouch and pipe. Gerber hatchet, flashlights, water containers, survival bag.

Another pic. Note light sleeping bag and survival bag.

Contents of survival bag. Basic first aid kit, barley, oats, coffee, boullion cubes, brown sugar, leather lashings, pieces of leather, trail mix.

My pack. It has an internal frame. I've taken it backpacking for a few days, and it was adequate. I can strap my sleeping bag and pad to it, and have enough room for clothes, water, all the above pictured crap, plus my Tyvec ground sheet, and 2 tarps, mess kit, and stove. I'd like to get a bigger, external frame pack sometime.

Great book.

I need to find my folding stove, hunting knife, sleeping pad, Tyvec, mess kit, and tarps.

I'm sick, I know.  :)

EDIT- Anyway, post your gear if you have any. Any additions, DIY knowledge, or suggestions are encouraged.

Better reference would be the 'SAS Survival Guide'. Additions suggested, quinine tablets, water purifacation osmosis type (small can type), tin can candle reflector and 12 survival candles, snare wire, mirror (dual purpose, use to check non visable areas for parisites, signaling). Hone oil not needed, use fat rendered to oil from snared food animals. Purchase a large USAF survival knife with hollow storage handle (will hold your basics, as well as standard items issued with knife). Fishing line with 3 hooks. US military lightweigh ponco (shelter as lean to), poly sleeping pad, 200ft min paracord, cord hammock (dual purpose, sleeping and fishing net).

Tip A. If spring or early summer do not sleep directly on ground (ticks, chiggers, and other parasites more active, use hammock)

Tip B. Snaring small game is a food multiplier. Use pelts as insulation, dry or smoke meat (try not to just cook and eat, food bourne illness greater chance, dried or smoked meat less prone). Render all fats to oils, preserves better and has multiple uses.

Tip C. Find flat rocks to prepare your fire. Large plate rock (do not use rock from streams or submerged) for fire base, large plate rock placed at angle supported with large stones with opening towards your lean to. Heat from fire as well as radiant heat reflected into shelter.
Also learn how to make a flat rock 'oven' with flat rocks sealed with dried mud. Field 'baking' also increases food, ground root flour (from wild potatoes check SAS manual on how to ID and find, very plentiful in North America)dried in sun, water, makes a good bread substitute.

Tip D. The 410ga USAF M-6 survival .22 rifle over 410 shotgun better choice than .22. http://www.wildernesscanoe.org/firearms.htm

I could go on from my SEER training but research is more fun.

My first and foremost suggestion that you're missing:
Water purification. Either tablets or another method, you're going to want clean water so you're not sick and dehydrating yourself facedown in the bushes.

A small mirror can be handy in case you need to get someones attention in an aircraft or across a distance (sun reflection).

Have you considered a flint? You have a knife, and matches, but flint doesn't run out.

Wind up or battery powered radio? Gotta hear emergency broadcasts somehow.

Not really sure what else if anything, just thinking of survival exercises in elementary school and whatnot.

oh, toilet paper? Obviously cant carry much but some is better than none when you can't find it elsewhere.

Once diet shifts to non-processed foods 'toilet paper' will not be needed as body will shift back to natural hard 'pellet' form excrement.

Wind radio good idea, carry 2 dead 'd' batteries and minimal of 25 foot commo or speaker wire to erect your 3m suspended between trees antenna, dead 'd' batteries are your insulators.

Where's your NBC mask and filters? I thought you were being serious about survival.....

You need some form of direction finder (compass or dial-type wrist-watch)
Wind-up radio is always good
Cordage, even if it's just clothesline, is a necessity
Wind-up flashlight
And as choop said, water purification.
I recommend a G.I. style steel or aluminum cup as well to be able to boil water or cook in.

Worst idea ever.  Very limited mobility, requires pavement, limited range, big, loud, sure to draw attention from thieves/bandits.

Knowing the time isn't really that important, but dial-type watches work well as direction finders if you know how to use them.

I have no urge to live like an animal. Hopefully I will be crushed by a tank during the initial crackdown by the government.

As for your gear, you forgot a hat. Keeping the sun at bay is a necessity. Can also be used as a basket when foraging, scooping up water, fanning a fire etc.

yeah, a tent, misc books, and a bed full of misc items is much better than a fully equiped RV...

No way animals or thieves, could cut through a tent with a knife. And having your wife and family protected by walls is so ignorant, cause the roads would disappear if something happened.

Is that reverse asphalt evolution?

Yeah, every time I go camping in my tent, someone cuts it open, steals my books and has their way with my girlfriend. If only there was a better way....

FE, it's interesting to see your crazy paranoia goes beyond your computer, and goes full fledged into your camping opinions.

Having something like that will only make you a target; a big, loud, clumsy, easy to take target.  And what happens when you need more fuel?  Going to go to a gas station?  Good luck finding one with anything left.  What happens if it breaks down, or if you get a flat?  Are you going to take it to the local service station?  No, you are going to be in the same situation as the rest of us.  The only difference is we tent people will be prepared for it.  You will be unprepared.
