Pretty cool.

And since this is ET related, and I know a bunch of the guys who were in the movie riding the BMX bikes...

here is a behind the scene's picture from ET.

Saw this on Twitter yesterday. But, all I've been able to think of so far was the book Deception Point.(which maybe 3 people on here MAY have read.)

On the topic of astro-biology, I have a theological question for  you, and I think it at least sort of falls under the jurisdiction of this thread.

Would the discovery of life on other planets effect your religious faith/beliefs at all?

I know when I talk to people about the potential for extraterrestrial life, they act as if it should shatter my belief system/The Bible because it doesn't mention life on other planets.

My response has always been that it would have no reason to be in the Bible. And while I'm a New Testament person myself, the entire Bible is really a religious "history" of Earth, and thus doesn't TRY to disprove life elsewhere.

Anyhoo, I thought this would be a decent Sub-topic people could discuss in this thread as well.

Maybe they just found God and he told them to stop looking for ET, as Earth was the only planet He created life on?

Deception Point is the ONLY book Dan Brown wrote that is worth a damn.

Wouldn't bother me at all if other life was found. Certainly wouldn't affect my thoughts on God or my belief.

Actually, it would seem logical to me in fact.

Would they have free wills and be similar to humans... Doubt it, but, I'm not God so I don't know what all he Created.

When I think of Creation, it is hard to look at all that was Created on Earth, and then pretend that those Creations stopped within our little planet... Especially when you consider the other planets and their diversity. Many people interpret "heaven" as being up there in space anyway. Not that I know one way or the other, but, I wouldn't be surprised if heaven was in fact out there somewhere. And if heaven were out there... then where is hell located?

All interesting thoughts, that stretch the mind. But, clearly we don't know all there is to know about our earth, or even ourselves for that matter, since we as humans only use a tiny amount of our brainpower...

I do think that there are other dimensions that we ignore as we are so focused on "reality". And those dimensions are just as "real" as what we experience daily.

But, I come to conclusions like that based on the things that I have witnessed personally that fail to make sense in the concrete world we all live.

I still can't understand how that girls jeans went THROUGH that bar this summer... It made no sense, and yet. I was there, and had my hand on the jeans as they passed through. So I know stuff happens that we can't explain. I just don't know why, or how...

But, I do enjoy questioning it, and trying to figure it out.

They tremble at my name...

Humans don't actually have free will. It's just an illusion.

If God is omniscient then humans have no free will.

Heres how its gunna go down:

"So yeah ladies and gentlemen, this is whats going on. We basically have no more funding, so effective immediately we are shutting down our astrobiology department and selling off the equipment. Even if we did find life on another planet, we would have no means of getting to it because our rocket program is also shut down due to lack of funding... so yeah, we got nothing."

or:

"We found life. The only problem is that it is intelligent and hostile and is coming straight for us and will be here at around 5pm EST. Have a nice day! Big smile"

If this is it, then I'll regret living in such a small town. Nothing good to loot around here.

Quote       Almost at once, however, Alexis Madrigal, science editor at The Atlantic, threw cold water on the notion that NASA had proof of alien life.

I'm sad to quell some of the @kottke-induced excitement about possible extraterrestrial life. I've seen the Science paper. It's not that.

Possibly they've identified a planetary mass with some sort of atmospheric or other indicators that fit much closer than anything previously discovered to being able to support life as we know it?

Huh.

Remember that thread you made about NASA a while back? The one where it wasn't pretty cool that they were exploring and finding things, instead, it was a massive tragedy that taxpayer money was being wasted?

Well, in case you forgot, here is the link to the thread.

And here are some excerpts from that thread:

Duly noted.

But the FACT still remains, that the ship that crashed into the moon costs what I said it costs. So that is a fact. It used our tax dollars, and many (even science loving people) could view this as a waste given our current fiscal emergency.

Oh, and this gem:

Whale, as often as I am against FE, I feel like you're grasping at straws here.

There is a large portion of the scientific community that disagrees with NASA having such a stranglehold on the American space industry, especially when the private sector could fund it so much more easily. I don't think FE was saying this type of search shouldn't be conducted, merely that we shouldn't be writing blank checks to fund it, because the government wants to keep control over it.

Ironically enough, that is also brought up in Deception Point.

Except for that last part, my belief in God does not encompass him taking the time to heal broken arms and runny noses.

I wasn't trying to make any sort of specific point. Just think it's funny how attitudes change over the course of time.

I still can't wait for the day someone/thing sets down on earth with thier intergalictic ship, and the worlds 1950's-80's Science Fiction series response is still that we are superior. We will kinda be like the early New England natives as the european sailing ships appeared off the coasts with massive four legged animals with a metal clad beings mounted on them, carrying 'firesticks' that killed. And as the Indians looked at thier war canoes, and bows, and still proclaimed they were superior to these 'animals' that just landed. And we know how well that all worked out.
