So as those of you who live in the DFW area know...we got an In N Out.

Now, a little personal factoid about myself, I'm a food lover. Like, I'm one of those people who would make a road trip halfway across the country just to try something new. I'm just happy I have a pretty good metabolism or else I'd be 400 pounds ordering pizza through a door I could no longer fit through. Seriously, when I go somewhere new, the first thing I do is start looking up online food reviews of the local foodplaces.

But one thing that I've consistently learned from eating, is that, in essence, a burger is a burger. They don't vary or differ a bunch, just small details that tend to separate them out along personal preference. That's why I see the whole "gourmet burger" movement as a complete fail. In the end, you could chop up kobe beef, load on some white truffles, and drop a 200 dollar price tag and there are still going to be people that prefer McDonald's.

So I've always been skeptical of the hype surrounding In N Out. I dated a girl who yapped about it nonstop, and I have a friend from California who thinks that they cook the end all burger. Seriously, people in Texas were waiting FIVE HOURS in front of the Frisco location, a lady arriving 5 days early and staying at a hotel just to get double cheeseburger. There was,on average, a two-three hour wait to get your burger the first several days of its operation.

So, skepticism aside, I made the hour and a half trek from my place to Frisco to give it a shot. I took my Cali buddy who looked as though he was about to lose his virginity to Megan Fox on a bed made of bacon, and as time went on, I got less and less enthusiastic about the whole trip. Finally we get there, we wait about ten minutes or so in line, and then place our order.

Now to their defense, it was the best service I've ever gotten in a fast food joint. Servers were almost cultishly cheery, the cook team was running like crazy, and everyone seemed to have a really professional work demeanor. The food made it out almost crazy fast, which was great because I was starving.

My opinion-? No big deal. I'd rate their burgers better than McDonald's, maybe slightly better than Burger King, but not as good as Whataburger. Nowhere near what you'd get at Red Robin or Fuddruckers, but I didn't really expect that either.

My biggest issue was the fries. I ordered regular fries and also animal style, which is basically just fries with melted cheese, bacon, and thousand island. But any way you dress them, they're awful. No saltiness, no crunch, just a kind of mushy bland stick. And seriously...the thousand island is disgusting, and this place is in love with it.

So hopefully I've started a flame war for those of you that took the time to read this. I'd love to hear some rabid In N Out fans explain to me why this place has garnered the near religious hype that you see with it. Otherwise, just drop your favorite burger place.

TL; DR - In N Out is overrated, give me your favorite burger joint.

Reading this tells me I need to go to Fuddruckers and Sonic also soon. I love both of em.

Burgers are fresh. Cheaper than a sit down joint.

Fries suck.

That's actually next on my list. There's one in Fort Worth, not very far from me.

Sonic must vary depending on where you live. Everyone I know loves them, but where I'm from, they're overpriced, oversalted, and not that great. Plus they never seem to get that whole "ice to drink" ratio right, and their drinks are way overpriced anyway. I think what usually draws me to sonic are the sides, and sometimes I get in the mood for a couple of Frito wraps and an ocean water,

Fuddruckers is spot on though. Love their stuff.

I think as fast food burgers go, Whataburger is probaby my favorite. A triple meat Whataburger with mayo, jalapenos, and bacon is my heart attack on a platter weakness.

I've never been to a Sonic that I would have called 'overpriced.'

In fact, if there was ever a place in my book that lived up to the hype, it was Sonic. The nearest one is over an hour away from me, but its kind of on the way when we go visit the inlaws- so we'll stop in every now and again. I've been to 5 of their locations- the 2 in NY, one near Mt. Rushmore, one in London Ohio, and the 5th I forget- and they were all excellent.

There's a 5 guys 2.4 miles from me, very very good food, but for a burger joint the one here is a tad pricey, so its not a regular stop for us.

I think amongst what could be called 'fast food' high atop my list is the burgers made by A&W. We went there somewhere in Oregon and it was absolutely fantastic. Red Robin isn't bad, but its nothing like the A&W I had.

For the low end of the spectrum, I do enjoy a whopper or a big mac every now and again- but not that often, and it isn't because of what they are- but because I've HAD better, and I WANT better from my fast food places.

I prefer all of them to Wendys.

And I've yet to get to In N Out, but I'll keep your evaluation in mind.

Fuddruckers is way over priced also.

In-N-Out is perfect. Fresh burgers, and get get a complete meal for 6 bucks and change.

Out here in Nebraska we have a chain called "Runza". Burgers are far better than Mc D's and BK, and priced competively. Also burgers are fresh ground and hand pattied, no pre shaped 'frozen' patties. Thier fries are top notch, and 'frings' a combo of onion rings and fries is one of my staples.

Our west I used to like "Carl Jr's", but once became part of the 'Hardies' chain quality dropped considerably.

5 Guys is not entrenched here at all, pricey but good, not worth the gas to get to the few in the area.

The national fast food chains are almost over saturating the market, as is Jimmie John's, JJ's is far better than Subway, but has no hot sandwiches, too many and a few are 'failing'.

And I really do miss the old A&W, today's immatation just does not compare.

I love a good burger, best burger around cincy was at fuddruckers (with the egg on it, they rarely offer it... but it was amazing).

Never had an in and out.

but, when the rankings came out and 5 guys won nationally, and we have a couple here in town, I figured I would try it out.

NOT impressed. very expensive to eat in a lousy atmosphere with a burger that is just... Ok.

Fries... Ok as well, nothing amazing about them.

Best fries I have ever had... Penn Station, and VERY consistant, always good. (club with provolone instead of swiss and no mayo is unreal btw)

I love Red Robin as well, their burgers/fries are very good.

Best "topped" fries. Longhorn steakhouse, their chili cheese fries are unbelievable, about a gazillion calories, but still, bets chili cheese fries EVER.

I still yearn for this place that I used to go to in NC called Fat Daddy's. We used to sneak out of school and drive over there for lunch almost everyday. They had a $5.00 student special that was a big cheese burger (with a toasted and buttered sweet bun) large fries, and large drink deal that was by far the best burger I've ever eaten. Huge toppers bar (like fuddruckers) and big screen TV's. Course that was over 20 years ago, so no clue if they are still around and still good.

As an east-coaster I think I'm required by law to bring up the fact that I think Five Guys is the best commercially available non-sit-down burger place around.

I've never been to an In-N-Out, but they do have a good reputation, if not a slightly hyped one.

Oh, and Jimmy Johns, while maybe not the best overall sub sandwich, easily has the best bread you can get at a sub shop. This is either chain or non-chain, I don't think I've been to a sub shop with better bread than JJs.

A Five Guys opened not too far from work but I've yet to go there. In all honesty if I want a good burger I just make it myself.

Also, Whale, you need to stop in Memphis and eat a sub from Super Sub Shop. They're very close to the U of M campus and they easily have the best bread. Infinitely better than JJs. Here is their listing on urbanspoon

I think I'll go get a 12" super sub for lunch today. I can't talk about that place with anyone without developing an insatiable craving.

For subs...

If you haven't had Firehouse subs, you haven't had a real sub yet... The new york steamer crazy good. Firehouse Hero sub is also amazing. The hook and ladder... mmm.

No, Firehouse is not a real sub. Nothing can beat the local shop here. Come try it if you don't believe me.

I tend to enjoy Claim Jumper's Widowmaker Burger,

Carl Straus' El Fuego Burger (which I am saddened to learn may have been removed from their menu forever,) Carl's Jr. Famous Star.

In and Out is good every once i a while. Lately I have been more fond of their grilled cheese over their burger. However if feeling extra hungry a 4X4 works nicely.

I am not big on fries. Dont need all the extra salt, carbs, and they are overpriced.

Fudruckers and Red Robin barely make the list of acceptable burger joints.

This, pretty much. Some charcoal and hamburger meat and I'll blow away any chain.

I can get into Firehouse. Probably my favorite sub place, though the one they put in Burleson is right across form a Charlie's, so I never make it. Say what you want about Charlie's, but their bacon, cheese, and ranch french fries along with a mushroom cheese steak is top notch.

Firehouse is OK. I don't really count them as the same kind of sub with a JJs or Sobix, though, as you sort of have to sit down and eat it with a fork/knife because of the sogginess of steamed meat. Also, the steaming can really make things bland at times.

The hot sauce options are nice, though.

My favorite is the Buffalo Burger at Ruby Tuesdays... Delicious.

As far as FF burgers go, I'm either going to have to go with BK's Double Whopper with cheese, or A&W's Teen Burger. I love the fries from both of those places, and A&W root beer is great.

Five Guys is by far the best burger around. Hands down. Fuddruckers is alright, and Sonic is overpriced/overrated.

Strato, I was at the one in Allen. Well was in the shopping complex but couldn't find it and wasn't that hungry. So I skipped it. One should be opening in Arlington sometime soonish.

I'm not a huge burger person so I can't judge properly. 5 guys is decent, but I feel awful afterwards. I love coming home from Indiana to get some whataburger. Jimmy johns is good but I like subway better. That's probably because I like hot food.
