My brother has a 357 like that. It is scary to shoot.
We once shot a 5 gallon tomato paste can with it for fun... In the snow.

Yeppers, it's a blast to shoot! Pun may or may not be intended...
It's a Smith and Wesson 686 (which is .357 mag) with an 8.375" barrel and Smith's special silhouette sights. The advantage to the sights is you can set 4 different range intervals in your sights so you can quickly switch between one row of silhouettes to another without readjusting your sights. The thing is, I'm not a silhouette shooter... I specifically bought this gun to hunt with. Right now, after putting 50 shots downrange at 50 yards, and keeping 80% of them in a 4" group, I feel I can successfully hog hunt. In a few months of practice, I feel I'd be capable of deer. Unfortunately, at only .357 mag, deer will be about the largest I can get. Frankly, I think I did rather well considering I'm not used to shooting anything more powerful than .45 ACP, and with irons. Thinking about optics. |

Re did the math, and changing my performance claim to 70% of shots in a 7" group. Still, I think I can take a hog with that.

My dad has the same gun, but with different sights. He always wears it on a shoulder holster when he hunts. About 10 years ago he was working on his ambusher stand when a 4 point walked within 10-15 feet of him. The 686 did the job. It ran a little ways but bled out rather quickly.

I love the gat. Needs more stag horn grips.
It's a .357 though? Only a slightly beefed up 9mm. Not exactly what I'd want to hunt with. Just remember optics don't help you shoot better, just see better. You should only put one on when you can do what you want with it without the glass. That being said, can't wait for pics of it with a scope. Also want pics of the hunt :) |

KBK: Handgun hunting is a subject I've been interested in for a long time. Before I went out and bought the gun, I looked it up, as well as the application of .357 as a hunting round. .357 mag is on the small side for hunting, but at up to 75 yards it should be able to proficiently harvest a deer (whitetail). At least, when the shooter is competent enough to shoot at that range. :P The glass is precisely for that: to help me see better. I don't really want magnification, just cross-hairs. I'm thinking a nice occluded sight or red-dot would do just as well at the ranges I'm interested in shooting at. Before I go chasing larger game, I'm gonna start with boar, which are considered pests here, so no licensing is required, and there's no limit.

Cool so long as you realise with the .357 shot placement will be absolutely paramount. My brother is the handgun hunter of the family. He uses a .454 Casull. Going back to our other thread, because it is cool. And it is. Honestly, a T-1 or a Trijicon RMR will be wicked on that thing. I prefer something with a little more oomph but that 8" is what the .357 was designed for wasn't it? It should be the bees knees with some premium ammo in it. KBK |

Just picked this up today at a gun show. Not gonna lie, I was sadly disappointed in the lack of tasers and jerky. It was around 418 after taxes.
