Saw the post in the New Players section and thought it was funny as I was just in the process of picking some jerky out of the "food trap" on my left side. Got some Jack Links Peppered jerky in my Xmas stocking this year. Its not bad, but not the best I had. Seem to be a lot of localish outfits out there making it. Anybody have specific favorites? Anybody out there NOT enjoy its savory goodness?

I was going to describe my displeasure with the idea, but couldnt figure out any way to say it that didnt sound horrendously perverted.

It's not as bad as it sounds. I haven't had their's, but it's just shredded jerky in a can for cowboy poseurs. (I used to use it when my idea of a fun hiking/camping trip was to take nothing more than a gun, ammo, a lighter, food, ammo, a knife, a poncho w/liner, ammo, a lensatic compass and ammo camping for several days in the mountains.) With some patience and a little water and a few packets of bbq sauce you could throw it on camping crackers and have a somewhat edible bbq beef sandwich.

Rosie's beef jerky up here in VT is pretty good. Original tastes like Jack Links a bit. $3 for 1.5 oz, bit pricey.

This reminds me of a story. When my oldest granddaughter was younger she would ride on my shoulders when her mom accompanied the off-duty supervisor and me to SAMs Club. (She has since gotten too big for this although I toss her up there every once in a while* much to the unhappiness of the pins in my back.) Anyway, we usually work our way through the store hitting the samples and I usually let her try one of whatever I got before getting her a sample of her own. On this specific day we got beef jerky samples (which she loves) and I had one piece and just gave her the rest. A little later she waves a piece of jerky in front of my face and says she is full so I open my mouth and she shoves it in. I very quickly realized that she had chewed on it for a while before she decided she was full. *She just looks so sad when I say "no." Edited by Mack - 10 January 2012 at 2:04pm |

My grandpa makes deer jerky. It tastes delicious, but has the tendency to take on the consistency of a shoe. Eating a piece is a 20-minute ordeal.

I used to work with a Vietnamese girl who's grandmother made the best damned beef jerky ever. Tasted like it had Chinese 5 spice in it.
Of the store-bought brands. Jack Link's Teriyaki is where it's at. |

My sister makes deer jerky, and it tastes great but isn't tough enough. Maybe we should mix the two recipes together and get the perfect consistency. |

I was so bummed, theres a place back home in Whitehorse that has incredibly good jerky. Meaty, salty goodness, and I always stock up when I go home before I fly back to Vancouver. This time when I went home they were completely sold out so I couldnt get any :(

I usually get Pemmican brand, its a blue bag with an Indian on the front. Peppered, or Teriyaki. Beef jerky is unfortunately expensive-ish.
Jerky chew isn't bad, but its jerky sawdust.

You guys are sad and pathetic.
Jerky? Honestly? You may as well chew on shoe leather. Get some decent biltong. All insults aside, those of you who make it yourself, how and what do you use? KBK |

I don't care for Jack Links, it is far too moist for a dried meat. I prefer Oberto, or Franks Red Hot by Duke.

When I used to make it myself I always ground the meat first. It made it much easier to chew once it was dried.

I have some friends that make the best vennison jerky I have ever tasted. Ive never had dry or overly tough jerky, except for the one time when I got some from some seller at Roots in PA. It was only a few peices out of a pound so it wasnt a problem.

The worst part was waiting for them to evolve sufficiently that they were edible. |
