Been looking into getting a smart phone basically to be able to check email on. I still have a flip phone which works, but its becoming a hassle and doesn't have decent internet and can't check my email from it...not really looking into it for the entertainment aspect, i think most any phone would suffice in that department for my needs. Any recommendations? Not looking to go crazy on price or anything, but it's looking like that will be an issue with any smart phone.

I would recommend the iPhone. Droids have a bad tendency to screw up big time after a few months and it gets worse when they do a software up date.

Not exactly true... I have had my Galaxy SII for almost a year now and I've updated the OS and it works better than before.

But really, if you are looking for a phone just for email and light entertainment just wait like a couple of months for the new iPhone to come out.

Personal experience, between myself, my wife, my parents and some friends. As for having a web link or such no.

Might be the phone maker also. My wife and I both had Droid 2s and they started to do what they wanted after a few months. Randomly sending text messages twice, keyboard(both hard and touch screen) would stop responding ect. My folks had Droid 1s and after a few months when ever talking to my mom it would randomly press keys while next to her face (the touch screen is suppose to turn off when held up to you ear) plus other random stuff.

I got cnet for all of my phone review needs, and if you can't find a review for a specific model there generally there are a few mobile review sites that give good, unbiased info out there (can't think of the names off the top of my head).

If you really and truly don't care about apps / entertainment and just want an e-mail / phone device I'd be willing to bet whatever smart phone your cell company is giving away for free will work. I'm with AT&T and they were giving away some Droids with new contracts / renews last time I check.

If you suddenly decide that you need something that does every thing well, you can't go wrong with an iPhone in my opinion. I'll probably switch to Droid next time around just for variety, but I've bought 6 iPhones (most destroyed due to user error...tossed in the lake, for example) plus just bought an iPad 3 and I've found that, as much as I dislike the lack of user customization, it's tought to get away from iOS once you get hooked.

Honestly, I find the android platform to be better supported than the iPhone. Apple has a horrible habit of discontinuing support for their phones after 6-9 months and then letting you sit there with what equates to a brick that takes calls and plays music, but doesn't do much else because the updates to the OS have overloaded the capabilities of the older phones.

Android, on the other hand, is much, much better at supporting older platforms.

Also, smartphones are about to get dirt cheap once the Google/Motorola buyout takes shape. Google is planning on developing their own hardware and software and then selling direct to consumer for cheaper than subsidized prices. It'll be the nail in the iPhone coffin if done right.

I upgraded to the Galaxy Nexus from the original Moto Droid.  Slick 4G LTE phone with Android 4.0.2 OS goodness.

Nah. Every carrier now-a-days has a smartphone offered for free with a two-year contract and data plan. Usually the "better" deals for that are online.

Right now it looks like Sprint's is the Samsung Conquer 4G. AT&T is the LG Phoenix (Or the HTC Status, but that doesn't seem like your thing). Verizon has a number of them, the big two being the LG Enlighten or the Droid Pro.

That's just online, though. Physical stores for all the companies also often keep a stock of older smartphones around just for giving away for free to customers signing 2-year deals or upgrading from an existing contract. Not only that, they normally can be persuaded into dropping or reducing the upgrade fee.

No, the free ones are not current-gen versions. They're often not even top-of-the-line from their generation. They're normally running on less ram, less internal storage, smaller screen, etc. But if you're looking to have the functions of a smart phone like Internet and e-mail, but want to save yourself some cash, I'd go with that. Walk into a store, ask what they've got free for signing a contract, make sure you like how it feels, and go.

I ran a Droid X2 for over a year and it never gave me any serious trouble at all. The iPhone interface is simpler to be sure, but having run both, I liked the droid better to to be honest, although I didn't ever get my hands on the 4S iPhone to be able to judge that one.

I've got a blackberry Torch 9810. It is amazing...

The camera shoots GREAT pictures, and it records video in 720HD. Web sites work well on it, and it has tons of apps. Plus the screen is strong enough that I've had it for about 6 months, and not a scratch on it.  (I think it is gorilla glass)
They tremble at my name...

While this is more true than for droid, it's over a timeframe of years, not months. That's a huge exaggeration.

I had an HTC Inspire for about 4 months, then switched carriers and got the iPhone 4S.  I found the droid to be much easier to navigate due to it have 4x the number of permanent function buttons.  The iPhone has far superior battery life, but is also a much smaller phone.  I didn't do much email on the HTC, but on my iPhone, it is pretty outstanding.  The droid had better ringtone options.

Thing I don't like about the blackberry is the small screen (for a smart phone), the keyboard, and this may just be me going crazy but every time I get a butt dial its from a blackberry.

Been looking into the razr, seems to be the biggest issue people have is the battery life...which is pretty important to me...any ideas?
