I'm pretty sure this one's Obama's fault, I'll bet he planned this one to cement votes right before an election somehow.
The mainstream media seems to be ignoring that possibility though. At any rate, I don't know what you all are expected to get where you are, but the people in my town are FREAKING OUT. They were bulls-eyed by Irene last year, and with the damages, loss of property and life, there's already not a case of water to be found in town. If facebook is to be believed (is it ever?) we're supposed to get apocalyptic snow fall, more rain than Irene, and probably a rain of fire falling from the sky. Truth be told, I haven't seen any official projections for the storm yet since its early- but everyone's expecting the worst, which isn't bad because a bit of preparation never hurt anyone. I've got a couple of concerns though- Where I live isn't in a danger zone, we're up a hill and didn't even see water in the Garage during Irene. I'm a bit worried about the infrastructure around town. After Irene, there was significant foot-dragging to replace bridges and washed out roads, and most of what was done has a slap-dash, temporary feel to it, to the point where if we do get any volume of water, even if its less than Irene's rainfall, the repairs will be gone in no time, trapping residents on some of our dead-end areas, and there's plenty of those. The other thing is that the emergency services department of my county has been puckered up since Irene. A few weeks ago, we got a full day of rain, and they panicked, and scrambled every fire department in the county to stand by their stations in case there was any weather related emergencies. There were none, at all. We didn't even get called to pump out a basement. I'm going to be pissed if they do it again, since I'm between a rock and a hard place with the newborn. I don't want to leave the family if there's no emergency, but I also don't want to NOT go in case there's evacuations that need to be done like there were last time. All in all, I'm hoping this stupid thing fizzles out, but I'll be spending the weekend putting in a stock of some non-perishables just in case. Like I said- being prepared never killed anyone right? Are any of you on the East Coast expecting anything severe? Taking steps yet? Edited by Reb Cpl - 26 October 2012 at 12:14pm |

From what I've read this storm could turn bad if the cold pressure system that's moving towards it and the hurricane mix together and form a really nasty system. I'm a bit concerned about it because of the wide area it covers. Stay safe and take care of your family and neighbors.

As I said on teh bookface: I have a chainsaw, gas, an artesian well, and a Subaru, I'm good.
Seriously though. Stocking up on non-perishable goods (soup, etc) firewood, and whatnot. I also had to explain to my wife that while she could still use the bathroom and take a shower if the power was out, she still needed to conserve water so we don't back up the septic system (effluent pump runs on electricity after all) |

Looks like its going to pass just north of us, as of right now. Which is cool, since I'll be down at the coast for an interview on Monday. Either way, hurricanes don't bother me too much. They're something we just have to grit our teeth and bear through for most of the state every few years. Some of the outer banks can get it hard every once in a while though.

We're not supposed to get hit until Monday. That's plenty of time for people to go through initial panic and loot grocery stores. |

We need to blame Bush and quick...............it is all his fault, not supporting Kyoto, Gloabel Warming, the weather machine hidden at his ranch in Texas. With the Obama numbers falling need something to get the left wing nutjobs motivated. Obama's press secretary is hard at work with then initial draft.
Nature does not have an agenda political or otherwise, storms happen, prepare, stop reacting people. Lets see got my 3500watt generator, 300gal fresh water, food stocks for 30days (even dog food), live up on a hill (bad here in tornado country), root cellar has enough room for family and dogs, pretty comfy, battery and crank SW radio, base station CB and FRS, yep we are set for weather, and or the zombie apocolypse whichever come first. |

I'm on the fence as to where i stick it out, I can stay in the 'burbs and enjoy gravity-fed water, or run to the hills and get worse flash flooding (and good fishing) and still get gravity-fed spring water. In New England our major concerns are stocking up on beer and batteries. We are used to a few day w/o power ever year anyways, so gas is the major issue.

I'm not expecting much but I'm preparing for the worst (packed my bags in case of those "oh crap we have to leave now" moments). Also bought some water, and basic supplies in case we have to wait it out.
I live less than a mile away from the Mystic River, the Charles River, and the Atlantic ocean...so flooding is a huge possibility.
Thankfully, my neighborhood is up on a hill....wish me luck. ![]() |

Schools in the area are pulling the plug early. Still no official estimate on the sort of weather we're supposed to be getting, aside from severe winds. Rain estimates have literally been everywhere between "6 inches in 3 days" and "As bad or worse than Irene." And Irene was 21" in less than a day.
My chief has us manning the firehouse 24/7 for the next few days, no particular shift schedule, but whenever we can get there for a few hours, we're going to make sure we're staffed. Edited by Reb Cpl - 28 October 2012 at 6:55pm |

We've put away enough fire wood for 3-4 days conservatively. Stocked up on soup, ramen, pb&j and mac & cheese. Chainsaw is gassed and oiled, cars are filled up, have extra cash in the safe and the shotgun and pistol are loaded in case we get an event on the scale of Evil Elvis' experience. Downstairs tub is already filled with H2O and will fill the upstairs one tomorrow after we take our showers. Our well feeds enough water artesianaly for us to get enough to drink and cook with, but not enough to keep flushing toilets and washing dishes with, so we're making sure we can take a dump without it turning into an outhouse situation.
Luckily the septic system is passive effluent discharge, so no pump to go offline there. I'll be breaking out the camp stove and dutch oven if we lose power. Good luck everyone. Hope you and your families make it through alright and with everything intact. |

We actually made preparations here in Detroit. We won't see anything severe, but we are planning on lots of rain. If we get a heavy downpour for more than 4-5 minutes straight, our sump can't keep up, and out truck well starts filling with water. So does my office.

We don't have a generator- but the guy across the street (our only neighbor) is working on a local construction project (huge dam rebuild) and today he comes home towing one of those generator trailers with lights, like you see on highway road work projects. He offered us up usage of it if we need it, and it should be more than ample to do what we need to.

I just went by the school to grab the emergency waive-off numbers for our deliveries (we're closed tomorrow and most likely Tuesday as well) and the Director of Operations already has a genny at his house and a bobcat, a wood chipper and a stake-bed truck on rental from the local equipment rental company.
