Who here makes maple syrup?

I'm trying this year. So far I collected about a gallon of sap between a sugar maple and a mystery maple over one day. Unfortunately a sapsucker is draining my sugar maple.

Don't you need some ungodly amount of sap to get any volume of syrup?

edit- I'm all for this kind of thing, though. Interested to see how it turns out for you.

Yes. I need about 10 gallons of sap for a quart.

Don't make it, but I picked up a bottle of this bourbon barrel aged syrup.  It's ungodly good.

Know what's even better? When the whiskey manufacturers then buy those barrels back from the syrup companies and put whiskey in them......

I like it when they take the barrels back and put beer back in it too.  So good.  So so good...

I contemplated doing this a couple of years back. The town I grew up in was famous locally for the maple syrup production, and a neighbor of mine used to tap all the trees along the road for miles and miles.

However, I balked at the layout I would have had to make for the equipment to make it all.

Maybe one of these days...I think it's kind of a fading art, at least around here...nobody seems to do it anymore.
