My girlfriend and I are kind of debating religion. She says something along the lines of "We have faith we don't need facts." At this point I busted out laughing.
Before, I had said something to her about how the fact that dinosaurs existed really goes against the Bible since they are said to have been around millions of years ago and the Bible says we have only been here ~ 6,000 years. This was brought up again just now and she said something about how maybe they co-existed and the Bible does not mention it because the writers didn't see it as noteworthy, or something to that effect. I had to stop arguing here so as to not put myself in the doghouse by repeatedly laughing in her face. Gotta love Theist logic. |

But haven't you seen those old stop motion movies of cavemen running from dinosaurs?
Obviously she's right. |

I started to watch some 70 minute thing of his, but something came up. Also, I want to get his book, but as my mom is very religious, I don't think she would like seeing that come in the mail very much. Edited by Hysteria - 28 January 2007 at 9:39pm |

Well, I'm a pretty devout Christian, and yes, the whole religion makes no sense. Even though that is true, I'm sure God exists just because of things that have happened in my life that I can't explain in any other way. Yes, I'm one of those people...

Heck, you can prove the whole 6000 years thing wrong with a telescope. Light years, etc. How many lightyears away can you see? That would mean how long the universe has been around....more than 6000 years.

Yeah, I think I have brought that up as well. In fact, I think I was prompted to do so by the Hubble ymntd that Detrevni posted.

My history prof is my kind of Christian. He's logical, sarcastic, cusses.....and DOESN'T TAKE THE BIBLE LITTERALLY! I'm all for the ideas and values Christ taught, the bible and the church is what screws it all up....

You are not a smart man. I've dated some pretty religious girls before and with them that is just a topic you ignore.

So you enjoy stomping on your girlfriend's faith?
Nice healthy relationship you got going on. Speaking as someone who has a girlfriend who is church-going, religious and all that while me myself not being that way, I have to say that you either 1) have to let it go, or 2) dump her already. Faith is something people put value in their lives in, and while it may seem silly to you, it probably is not to her. If you keep thinking you have to "convert" her so to speak and belittle what she believes in you are pretty much doomed. |

So logical and rational thinking without blind faith is the new "in" thing. If only that were the case... Mbro and Whale, I do tend to stray away from arguments about religion and I am not trying to "convert" her, but I can not help but to call BS on a very rare occasion. |

there are people who take religion very seriously One guy told me that smoking pot will take you to hell I asked him why he said that I was breaking the rules I asked him... "what rules" (knowing the answer obviously) "the 10 commandments of course" I asked him which ones he told me that I was lying (i suppose that breaks #9) I asked him, "to whom is it lying?" he studders for a minute.... then bursts out: the police i just laughed and walked away. ---------- Nothing against religion, to each his own I suppose. I guess the closest religion i am to is agnostic. I believe there was a creator but not in any organized religion Edited by carl_the_sniper - 28 January 2007 at 10:27pm |

Just to get this out there. The Bible never defines how long a year is. That 6,000 years could be a lot longer than 6,000 years of how we think about it.

But unless the Bible's definition of the word varies each time, it does not make that much of a difference. Say each year in the Bible is actually 100 years. That means Jesus lived to be 3,300 and the earth is 600,000 years old. There is no way Jesus lived that long and the Earth has still been around longer than that. |
