    Posted: 25 September 2007 at 4:26pm

I am looking to buy an air pistol for screwing around with (not literally) in the backyard.

I am looking at crossman because it seems like a decent company.

I am deciding between two. right now.

This which is $250 at my local store seems kina cool: (don't make fun)

http://www.crosman.com/site/listing/1326

And this one is $150 at the same store:

http://www.crosman.com/site/listing/1323

It's pretty obvious why I like the the first one. It's visually apealing and fires at 430 fps.

The second I like because it has blowback.

Just wondering:

1) What is blowback, and why would I want it?

2) Which would you recommend and why?

3) The second one only goes up to 350 fps. Will I notice that when I shoot in my backyard? (I will be shooting between 100-150 feet)

4) What would be a safe thing to mount paper targets on?

5) The second only shoots bb's. Are they accurate? I only have experience with pellets.

Blowback means it will function similar to a semi-auto pistol when shot, except no shell will fly out.
I would take the blowback but i must go with the first one because it has a higher FPS.

Yeah blow-back means the slide will 'blow backwards' when the trigger is pulled like a real hand gun does.

I have a CPSport by Walther that I paid $80USD for. It's fun, but they are very inaccurate.

There was a reason I said that. Blowback seems to be a major selling point on a lot of air pistols.

So why would I want this?

And do you mean inaccurate because of the blowback?

how much you willing to spend?  ill link to a gun i have that i absolutly love but its just a bit pricy.  no more expensive than many paintball guns ive seen here.

http://www.airgundepot.com/colt-airpistols-1911nickel.html

ohh NVM price reduced alot since i last looked them up.

8 shot cylinder style clip, ambi. safty switch, the look and feel of the colt 1911A1.

now for those questions.

1: blowback is when the whole slide of the gun moves back like a real gun does.  honestly its a waste of gas and requires way too much TLC to keep it working right.i have a walter PPK blowback pistol and had to file the clip that holds it back so it would reset itself after each shot.

2: if those are the 2 your set on id say #1 simply because i dont recomend blowback on a pistol like those.

3: unless your picky over things like that 350 and 430 FPS wont make much of a difference.

4: find some old deck planks or any boards about 3/4 inch thick and make a box big enough to hold the target on the outside edges.  that way if you decide to use a bb gun instead of a pellet gun it will also trap the bb's for use again.

5: bb's are more accurate than some pellets but in general a pellet will be much more accurate.

I don't know about that gun, the laws on replica firearms are kinda sketchy here.

I read that blowback replicates the recoil of a real handgun, is this true?

The slide will rack back but nothing can really duplicate the feel of a true gun.

You can get that colt here.

Imo if you want an air pistol and your looking at crossman. Look at the 2240. Bolt action .22 and fires at 400+ fps. Add a longer barrel (from a 2289 ) and your at 495+ FPS(Don't tell the gov ) or the barrel from the 2260 and you can get a new hammer spring and fire at close to 625 fps.

Can also hook it up to a paintball C02 tank instead of 12 grams

the 22XX series crossman airguns are like the Ruger 10/22 of the airgun world. Easy to get parts for. Simple. effective.

$250 for an air-pistol? Are you crazy?

Spend $30 for a C&R license and then get one of these: 9x18 "Makarov" CZ-82

It'd run you the same price!

Andy: don't you nneed a firearms license for a .22 no matter how slow it shoots?

Tallen: In canada, it is a lot harder to get a pistol than in the US. Most people don't even bother with it.

Its a .22 airgun. No need for a licence or registration as long as its under 500 fps

And tallen. You also cant shoot a pistol out in the boonies like you can in the USA. In Canada you have to shoot them at a designated range. Plus a Restricted PAL is a pain to get.

The thing is that any real firearms store is at least 30 mins away from me.

Meaning that I would prefer to buy something that I could buy ammo for at canadian tire.

sheridan is the same thing as crosman, only fancier, like what Lexus is to Toyota.

Gamo makes some high quality stuff.  They make some pretty nice handguns as well.

Also, this handgun is only $70
