So, I bought an ipod touch in the middle of January, like a week before the January Update came out. So, I was on apples site, and saw a customer service link, had nothing better to do, and wrote a complaint basically saying that it's not fair that I have to pay the 20 bucks for the update because if I had waited a few days, I could have gotten it free pre installed on a new ipod, and I could have even returned mine to get a new one in exchange, but didn't want to go through the hassle. It didn't matter if I got it or not and thought I wasn't to anyways, but like I said, I had nothing better to do and it was worth a shot. So I write the email, the next day I am told they are very sorry and all I had to do was purchase the update, send them the transaction code, and they would refund me all my money. Awesome, so I write back thanking them and everything, and I am told my money will be in my account within a few days. I get another email today saying I have to refresh my account to get the added money, and low and behold, I have the $20 and what's this, 3 movie credits. They apologized and said the movies were complimentary and to make up for the hassle. Apple rocks my socks. Any movie suggestions? I'm definitely saving one for step up 2, but other than that I'm open to suggestions

TL;DR: Apple rocks, they gave me a free iPod Touch January Update ($20 value) and 3 free movie downloads for my "hassle".

Why did you have to pay to get an update?

Yeah, paying for updates is pretty lame.

I wish Sony had as good customer service though. My PS3 died and I missed the extended warranty (for systems purchased in Nov-Dec of 2007) because I bought it on January 3rd 2007. I am now paying Sony $150 for a refurbished system in exchange.

Congrats

In other Apple news, they just announced that they will sometime soon release software that will allow the iPhone (and Touch?) to use third-party software - which Windows Mobile/Palm devices have been doing for almost a decade now.

Apple rocks indeed.

(and lol @ paying for updates)

Apple is actually really cruddy about making their customers pay for software updates that would otherwise be free if they were for a different operating system. For example. Since the launch of OS-X, apple has generated 5 'new' OS-X pieces. While each piece can receive free "updates" for that particular version, to get support and update past about the 2-year mark, you have to purchase a 'new' version of OS-X. To put it in layman's terms, it'd be like Microsoft making you pay $180 for SP-1 and SP-2 for XP rather than just including the updates for free like they do. What's worse is that any peripherals you might want to use with your Mac usually require the latest OS to operate correctly. For example, the new Nano, Touch, etc. all require you to have at least OS-X V 10.4.5 or higher to be compatible with the iPods. That means an OS that is 3 years old or less just to use an MP3 player. Hell, XP is what, 7 years old now?

Each little "os" increment is hardly just a patch or SP. Leopard is a big step up, and more than you'd ever get through an update.

How many generations of the ipod could you run on osx that were older than 10.4.5 though. I mean there is just a point where you can't  get things to work together without a major update. IMO all the osx updates up until now were fairly optional, I know lots of people who didn't update right away when the new os's came out. The only reason my family does it, is because well my dad gets the disks from work and makes copies, or leopard he got for free, because he works at the apple store now, and then he just gives it to all of us for our computers. Definitely not legal, but hey I see no reason in buying the family addition when you can get it for free.

Yeah, since the iPhone has been out for a decade and everything.

And Tallen, I'd much rather pay for a good OS than to be given a free crappy one.

Debian is GOD!

XP, btw, is actually a rather good OS, by far the most stable that MS has ever put out aside from 2000NT. Saying that Any current iteration of OS-X is "better" than any current iteration of XP is simply not true. Honestly, it's comparing apples to oranges (no pun intended). However, arguing that point with a Mac user is pretty much pointless as Apple fanboys are about as rabidly blind and un-yielding as Sony fanboys.

And the same goes for the Windows diehards. Agree to disagree.

EDIT: iPhone updates have been free thus far.

Heeehhh? I have a nano plugged into my unupdated eMac right now. Its 4 years old. 10.3.9, I can do everything with it, Touch, etc etc...

And the updates are huge. Big as Xp to Vista but not every 5 years.
