update: the reason the locks were changed is because the previous owner sold the house a 2nd time weeks after we closed...

so someone drilled the locks on my house and stole every dead bolt and door knob...

the house was forclosed on by the previous owners bank. we think they sent someone over to do it... there was a lock box on the front door but no realter serial number. i cut it off, opened it up and got into the house... nothing else is missing as far as i know.

so far they owe me 100$ for new locks, 50$ for a grinder and extension cord (both of which i had inside the house but had to rebuy) and then 2.5hr time for buying tools, locks, and replacing the locks. i figure standard rate is aprox 100$ per hour.

250+100+50= $400

cops said it was a civil matter because there was no criminal intent however, we are hanging no trespassing signs tomorrow so if it happens again we can press criminal charges.

That sucks, but I don't really follow what happened? Are you saying the dead beats came back and just vandalized locks?

the owner before us dident pay so they got forclosed on. we bought it from their bank. for some reason i think the bank sent someone to change out all the locks. even though we have owned the house for 3 WEEKS!...

i took the box but left the U bolt it was hanging on kind of as a F you...

i am buying a shot gun tomorrow morning at wal-mart. i wont aim it at anyone but i will have it in my hand if i confront ANYONE on my property...

Be very, very careful about that. In this particular
case it's far more prudent to just immediately call the
police. Anyone coming in and getting rid of locks is
probably operating under the belief that they are acting
lawfully. You don't want stupidity to escalate a
situation. Just let them know the police are on their
way, and get their names and the names of their
supervisors.

i dono the cop said "it was obviously done by a relater and there was no criminal intent it is a civil matter"

im thinking because there is property damaged/stolen it IS in fact a criminal matter. im wanting to call again in the morning and have it written up.

what are your thoughts rambs?

install security system? get a dog maybe. black labs, from experience of having them since i was little is they are very loyal if you treat them well, and **** up anyone they don't recognize as a friendly walking through the front door. mine has done it on a few occasions...or had the opportunity had the screen door not been in the way.

i'd suggest installing some constantino wire and some trip mines with claymores but the neighbors might get a little spooked

edit- and it sounds like the prev. owners or associates...who else would steal door knobs and bolts?

il put up 4" thick steel walls on all sides of the property. install trip wire mines around the house and have 8" alligators with 20mm anti tank guns mounted to their back.

edit: i know it was the prev owning bank. but its just another PIA i have to deal with... and MORE money out of my pocket and time i should be spending dealing with this stuff.

If the "realtor" honestly thought that he was authorized to enter, then there is no crime.  That much is correct.

But if you bought the house three weeks ago, and live there, how could they not know?

we dont "live" there yet. we own a condo .5mi away so we are just driving over and doing work.

but by mid day monday EVERYONE involved will understand the situation and we will have someone to name in a civil case to reimburse me/us for our time/money.

That sounds bad. Pray for boring, your life needs it. I don't know how I would deal with a mess like that.

I guess now is a bad time to tell you that I posted your house on craig's list as "abandonned house - free wiring and copper plumbing to anyone who wants it".
