Gatyr can squat 335 pounds!! Eat it, omnivores.
I guess we can make this a general exercise/weight-lifting thread so that this isn't spamming. So, who lifts? What's your split? Numbers? Goals? Runners/sport-specific exercisers? I know a LOT about lifting now, and there are a LOT of misconceptions out there (even among people who think they know what they are doing), so feel free to ask questions. I'm only squatting just over 1.5x my body weight (which isn't special for anyone who lifts seriously), but I'm happy for two reasons: first, it's a personal best; second (and more importantly) this happened after maintaining my routine for just three weeks (and that was after a nearly month-long hiatus from lifting). For anyone who cares, I'm doing my best to do DC training for the moment. |

I work out every day, but my bench press is pathetic for someone my size (6'5" 217). I think I can bench around 200. Never done squats, no idea there.
Excercise-wise-I do half an hour cardio (either running, bicycle, or in this weather stationary bike), crunches, pull up bar, then the bowflex last. Usually around an hour and fifteen minutes in the morning. I'm in pretty good shape, but I definately need to start a free weight routine.

I stopped lifting for about 7 months mainly because I lost all will power, but I started again last week. I haven't started lifting heavy weights yet since I don't wanna hurt or strain myself, but I know I'm no where near the strength I was.

Work out 5+ days a week, run a few times too weather permitting. Also know a lot about lifting, nutrition, and a ton of other theory behind it. It pretty much engulfs most of my free time. Strato: Yes, yes you do need to start a new routine lol. |

What is a good routine if you're time crunched? I know nothing about nutrition and excercise...lol...like I said I'm pretty fit, but I would like to get more fit / make sure it lasts

335lbs is a lot of roughage. I believe that's also heavier than Bono, congrats on setting the new record. |

If you have an hour and fifteen minutes each morning your hardly time crunched. I can do my workouts in about 45min. |

I was meaning more like getting to a gym. I usually just wake up early before school to work out, but there's no way I can make it to a gym that consistently. |

I lift every other day and do cardio on the days in between. Right now I am maxing my bench at 250. My goal is to put up twice my body weight at 270 I still have a little ways to go. Really crawls up at higher weights.

My workplace out here has a Gym on site so I've been going daily, doing upper body 3 days a week and lower body 2 days a week. Finally coming close to benching 135lbs, I need to sit down for a while and really figure out a good routine.

Me? I do at my house where I am originally from but I am currently at school. I just use the school gym, I don't use the one in my house when I am at home anyway. They are metric weights and it is weird. What would normally be 135 is like 132 or something like that. |

I do have a bench, but my neighbor has it ATM. Right now the only equipment I have per se is the excercise bike and the bowflex.
The bowflex has done wonders for my arms though, it worked alot better than I thought it would. But I imagine I'd do alot better with free weights.

A LOT. How hard exactly would it be for you to get to a gym? |

It's possible, but probably only 2 or 3 days a week. I can get a bench, it's not so much a money issue, but I don't have a spotter. I'm sure I could work a gym in if I tried.

Not gonna lie, I didn't get it until I saw this:
Well played, gentlemen.
Three days a week is a good lower-bound if you work hard enough, and you could be out of the gym in less than 45 minutes if you don't allow yourself to zone out and you can save cardio for other times. I only workout three times a week myself, and it works for me. And freeweights are generally considered the only way to go if you have access to them. The bigger douche bags who lift seriously have a holier-than-thou attitude towards people who use machines because the workout is really that much better with dumbbells/barbells than with machines (and because they are douche bags). The simplest reason that I know of for that is because freeweights require you to use stabilizer muscles in the joints you use to lift, and you typically have to work the core to do the lift, so there's that gem as well. And you should definitely do more squats and deadlifts. There's usually that douche-bag-attitude toward people who exercise with weights but don't squat, except this time it's more warranted. There really isn't a better lift to start your workout with than squats, deadlifts, and (to a lesser extent) the bench press. You work an extremely high number of muscle groups for the first two lifts, and your central nervous system gets the shock it needs to stimulate muscle growth (which has to be done, btw; if you don't do that, you don't get nearly as much from your workout as you could).
Google 'starting strength' if you just need a good routine to stick with. Past that, you really only need to work each muscle group twice a week (unless you are using 'supplements' to speed up recovery time) if you are doing strength training...which you are if you are using weights.
Crossfit is a good program, but you really have to give it your all, all the time to get the results you want for muscle growth and strength. I decided a long time ago that doing crossfit by myself isn't for me because I don't have the drive to do all of that with the drive required to get everything from it, but you might be different. If you can afford to do that at one of their training centers, then that's a good option. |
