For a business.
Quick story: My brother in law and I were shooting the breeze about our college days when the subject turned to beer pong. Half jokingly we said that we should start building custom painted beer pong tables to sell to local frats and sororities, sports teams, etc. One thing led to another and I mentioned the idea to a friend of mine who is in a newly formed sorority at SUNY Oneonta. She mentioned it to her organization, and they actually put in order, submitted a design, and are willing to generate some publicity for us out there among the greek organizations in exchange for a price deal which we happily arranged. We're literally starting from scratch, and this is a pretty good way to do it because there's very little overhead. We've gotten advice from my sister who started and runs a successful service business, and my brother in law himself is running a branch of the insurance company he works for. I don't have a head for that stuff, so I'll be handling the construction of the tables themselves. But we're stuck on what the hell to call ourselves. Our last names are awful to try to get anything out of, Lonecke and Krill (Yes, like the shrimp) So lets play pretend. Pretend you're in my shoes and have to come up with something clever and catchy, yet short enough to work as a web domain. If you need more info, I'll supply what I can. Thanks boys. I came here expecting to read that you are having another kid and want us to name it. I am very disappointed.
As for the company name, it has to be something to do with balls.

Carpe Bibere
loose Latin translation (seize the drink, or gather the drink) Beer comes from the latin "bibere".
Whatever you do, sell them as "study tables"... So mom and pop won't bat an eye to pay for them. And make them waterproof so they can stay outside in the rain without warping.
www.carpebibere.com is available.

FE that's brilliant. OPBN, I like the simplicity behind yours too.
Waterproofing is a must we know that already, I'm toying with urethane or a plexiglass covering over the painted surface. I've actually got plans for one made out of whiteboard. |

I think the Latin name might be a tad highbrow for your average college frat/sorostitute

Conversely, the Latin might seem 'Greek enough' to your average frat boy, and the name recognition factor is high. I think Carpe Bibere Beer Pong Tables is a winner. "Yo, is that a Carpe Bibere?!" "YOU KNOW IT, BRO" *Brofist while looking at the camera* |

Lonecke and Krill sounds like a name for a law firm.
In regards to the name, I think FE hit a homer. I can see the ad campaign now: Carpe Bibere . . . because you want to bounce your balls off the very best. Edited by Mack - 08 September 2010 at 11:15am |

FE's idea seems about right. It's got that mysterious hand crafted for centuries feel to it and if you do it right that's exactly what you want.

I don't drink, so I don't know the rules or how to play beer pong, but I live next to Miami University. So I see these contraptions EVERYWHERE.
The key is marketing. You have to get a good product that is different from the average. (most I see are old ping pong tables, or home made plywood.) Almost all are left outside, (though it seems they are low dollar) a high dollar would probably be brought inside to keep it from "disappearing".
Size is an issue, if you could figure a way to hang it on a wall for storage it might be cool, especially if the graphics are fresh, and make good wall "art".
Do you yell "beer pong" at any point in the game? Are there common rules for the game? variations?
I would add "professional" to the branding, so it sets it apart from cheap home made versions. And include "rule sheets" with the name you choose being the key, especially if there are multiple ways to play. You could have different colored rule pages. Again, I don't know, but I would assume when a player misses, they have to drink up. And if you could bring in the name, as what you yell before you drink... It could spawn youtube video's... Which would be free advertising.
For sure you need t-shirts. Something about seeing "Carpe Bibere" on shirts along side their frat name would be perfect... I would also check to make sure that is proper grammer... I picked the words from a google search, so it may be improper latin... Edited by FreeEnterprise - 08 September 2010 at 12:11pm |
