That bothers me: "We are the roots of paintball."
Hardly. The roots of paintball are guys who went out with a purpose-built Nel-Spot made to mark trees and cattle to harvest, and decided to shoot each other instead. From there it went to pump play. As a matter of fact, I think Mil-Sim came AFTER the desire to make guns all shiny and flashy. Take Earon Carter for example. And Dave Youngblood (founder of DYE). These were THE big names in early paintball, and they went out to make the guns as individual and "stand-out-there" as much as possible. Of all the serious competitors of the early days, I can't think of any who were actually a Mil-Sim team. Just sayin'... |

Charles Gaines. Nelson as a company has been around for much longer than paintball has been a sport. Mr. Gaines and his friends decided it would be a good idea to shoot each other with them. |

No, actually the game went to a 'military' theme initially, playing 'war' with pumps dressed in surplus military clothing and commercial safety goggles. The transition from pump to semi started the drift to colored guns and pajamas as the populace saw the game as a 'wargame' and the people in the game wanted to get away from a 'military' theme to gather more interest. The game ebbs and flows between mil-sim and tourney, and the more aged players and oltimers in the sport drift back to the slower woodsball and scenario/mil-sim as they age. The first 'World Cup' was at Survival NY, and the majority of the players were in military themed clothing, with the pumps (with auto triggers) and the first semi's. Was there and was one of the first games played with my 68Special.

Milsim 2010=/=Milsim1985
The roots of paintball are the people out there with ratty BDU's and markers older than 1/2 the players on the field.
Heck, a few of my markers are older than me.
I miss 'oldschool' milsim. When I got into paintball, the run of the mill milsim marker was a 98 or A5 with a BT barrel, carry handle, and stock. You had GTA(Genuine Tippmann Accessories), Pro Carbs, Mags and Cockers were still used by the common populace, there was ONE .50 caliber marker...(continue ranting).
The introduction of the Tippmann X7, and then later Project Salvo killed Milsim for me. I used to enjoy seeing homebrew markers, now anyone can play GI Joe. Takes the fun out of it.

Really liked making that old 68Carbine into a XM-177 replica, or moding the old 68Special into a good Mil-Sim rifle. Yes the new premade markers are 'ready to use' but still you can mod em up to be missione specific, and too me moding the markers is sometimes more fun that actually using them.
I have enroute an Airsoft M-203 launcher to fire NERF rockets for my Project Salvo, and have a CAW airsoft M-79 Thunper to fire NERF rockets. The new potentials are endless, there are even airsoft RPG's out there for paintball anti-tank work. Some green gas and a NERF 2in finned football and you are in bussiness. That's not how things work here.
When I first started playing shop goggles were all that was available; they didn't make masks yet. Edited by Mack - 08 August 2010 at 11:56pm |

Okay, I will admit my comments were a bit, well, inaccurate. However, I was currently in a debate involving "Mil-Sim vs. 'Clown Guns,'" and I was really put off by this comment here:
That said, look at Mil-Sim now and then. Mil-Sim wasn't "Mil-Sim," it was woodsball. There is a distinct difference. Mil-Sim is people adding useless accessories to their guns, digi-camming up, overbearing MOLLE gear, etc. just to replicate military environments as much as possible. Back in the day, players raided surplus stores for military gear, because it worked better in the woods. I'm sure people still "Mil-Simmed," but I REALLY don't think it was as prominent as it is today... That said, I have no problem with Mil-Sim. Sure, it's not my forte. That doesn't mean I'm going to look down on you if you play it. It's a style. I've got no problem with speedballers, roll players, woodsballers, Mil-Simmers, or any one else. I'm going to go to a field, I'm going to play on that field, and I'm going to shoot at you if you shoot at me. I don't discriminate... I got a kick out of the idiot psychologist at 15:10 stating that the military used tracer rounds in war games. |

I can agree their on not separating paintball but from my experience, it's hard not for the game in general to branch out like a tree you might say as far as speed, woods, scenario, and mil-sim. I will admit that I do hit the military surplus stuff for gear and have come to love the flexibility of my MOLLE vest. I will also say that in recent years paintball has been evolving back to the woods were it all started but markers like the A5 and X7 or the project salvo didn't kill mil-sim. Those markers allow players to make the marker more to how they love their game to to help them get into it better. With guys like Eric Engler and Dan Hallak of scenario arms making a wide range of mods to put on markers like the X7 and the fact that you can go to an airsoft shop or a firearms store to get any piece of MOLLE gear or accessory that can be used on a fire arm, or airsoft gun grately expands a players options and pushes the limits on realism. |

I meant that mil-sim markers and airsoft guns have the same standard 20mm RIS rail on them and they make those king of guns highly versital |
