    Posted: 20 December 2011 at 3:34pm
So, I graduated from Appalachian State this Sunday, woohoo me. As a graduation present, my dad got me this piece of artwork.

Kimber Ultra Carry ii, in stainless steel. .45acp.  It's got some pretty nifty Kimber Night Sights on it as well.

Here it is with "big" brother. (little brother? I can't decide, bigger framed gun, smaller caliber)

Hands down the most surprised I've ever been with a gift I've received, except MAYBE my car when I was about to turn 16. Couldn't believe my dad was able to purchase me such a nice gun.

It'll be my off-duty CCW and probably my ankle/SHTF piece while working, once I find a job.

Anyways, I thought some people here might appreciate it. It'll be at the range Thursday or Friday, whenever this weather clears up.

Nice .45 you got there. I cleaned a 1911 for the first time yesterday, I felt like a man LOL

Serious question though... I have read in a few places about LEO's carrying a backup gun, most of the time a S&W on the ankle. Honestly... whats the point? If a badguy steals your regular sidearm?

My friend had a Ultra Carry like that. I love the look of the bead blasted finish.

I Carried a Glock27 on the ankle for about a year and a half. Strictly for a backup in case of some catastrophic malfunction with the primary. I changed my mind after a while because (other than the element of surprise) there is no good way to protect it from getting snatched in a tussle.

Face it guys, common sense is a form of wealth and we're surrounded by poverty.-Strato

Seriously. I hope this one runs like a champ. It sure does look pretty.

Kimber will not be getting any of my hard earned cash for a while.

Last I heard Fort Worth PD requires you to wear a backup pistol.

I knew I a guy who carried a PPK, and I kind of realized at that point he didn't actually plan on having to use his backup sidearm

The best explanation I ever heard in the Yes/No debate on having a JIC weapon was, "The arguments against having one don't hold a lot of water, and it's always better to have one and not need it than vice-versa." Most of the patrolmen I know carry one on their ankle or elsewhere, just in case of a catastrophic failure to their primary, or a tussle that has your gun tangled with the assailant and unable to fire.

Sure, it might not be a great option, but that's why it's your backup/last resort. There are more than enough stories out there of an officer needing his reserve for me to feel like it's worthwhile.

Think anyone in a gunfight ever felt that they had too many guns or too much ammo?

Maybe if only one of the guns/ ammo matched and they were all in a massive jumbled pile?
