So... with SHTF in Libia, gas prices are rising fast. The national average is around 3.20 right now, and expected to rise substantally unless things go back to the norm in Africa. Supposedly, if things were to go wrong enough, we could potentially hit another 1973 oil crisis.

Thoughts?

INb4:
1. This is Obama's fault.
2. Look at this random link because I dont want to admit I am wrong.
3. Canadian whining because gas is 7.50/litre.

National average is $3.20?

I've been paying more than that for months. Thanks NY taxation.
$3.54 is about what I'm paying now. I watched it jump 12 cents in two days.

I heard more than once that the ONLY reason gas is going up right now is because of speculation. There are no shortages, there is no increased demand, and even if Libya shuts down, they are only a small portion of the overall picture. Put bluntly,  the only reason prices are up right now is pure unadulterated greed.

12 cents in 2 days? I wish that would happen around here.

On my way to class a couple days ago: $2.97
After 2 classes: $3.29

32 cents in a matter of hours. That's the point where your guage magically goes straight to 1/4 tank from full.

Gas is a monopoly. We need to buy gas, so they up the price as they please, and without any competition, there's no incentive to lower the price. The only time we see prices fall is when the gas companies need public opinion to sway to their side.

This. When you see gas go up the day of the freakin' news breaking, there's some gouging going on somewhere.

As long as the Saudis are in our pocket, I don't foresee a gas crisis, unless something major happens with Iran. I remember right after 9/11 happened the gas would go up and down like a roller coaster based on speculation.

But as someone already said, it's a free market. It's far past time we started looking at serious government funding to alternative energy. How many gas shortages can we endure before people begin demanding this?

As far as the Facebook whining I've been seeing, I can only shrug my shoulders. When you make the choice to buy F-250's and drive hot rods, you buy the whole cow. In this era people should be preparing for issues like this by having at least one economical vehicle, if they can at all afford it. Americans live far above their means, and then piss and moan when it comes back to bite them.

Looks like I switched jobs just in time! Used to drive 100 miles round trip every day and fill up twice weekly. Now I drive 8 miles to work 1 way and fill up about twice monthly.

Friday morning gas was $2.95. On my way home, gas was 3.15-3.20. Then when I went to help my cousin move to Staten Island today gas was 3.61 average. Plus, they had to pump their own gas!
