I guess she couldn't take the heat from the far right on top of the usual democractic skepticism....

Sucks though cause now he's gonna have to find some scary neo-con nazi type judge to appease his "base" and there's gonna be another Roberts fight but worse....nuclear option and all probably....

It's pronounced 'nucular'. Nucular.

I saw that bumper sticker: "Fine, I give up. It's 'Nucular'."

On the same car: "Democrats are sexy. Ever hear somebody comment on a hot piece of elephant?"

I was giving it 50/50 odds that Bush would force her to go down in flames in the Senate, although this is clearly the smarter political move.

It'll be very interesting to see who comes next.

It did strike me as a little left field that she had no judge experience, just tons of legal experience.

I was waiting for my Californian Senator Diane Fienstien to rip Myers a new one on the issue of abortion. Oddly enough in my past I have hated that lady for taking away guns in California but I seem to have learn to respect here more and more over the past few years.

I would hope Bush picks a women outside his immediate homebase camp. I mean come on, how far did he look to appoint the white house legal attorney? Sure she might have made a great Supreme Justice but since she buckled I guess not.

Anyone know Laura Bush's opinion on abortion? It is a little of topic, I know but it would be interesting to compare it to George's.

And since this is a political thread. How do you think will be the president first? A Democrat woman or Republican woman?

Nominating a Justice without judicial experience has plenty of precedent (like Justices Powell and Rehnquist), but has fallen into disfavor recently.  The larger question with Miers were her overall professional qualifications.  She has certainly had an impressive legal career, but so have many others.  For a Supreme Court Justice we hope for more than merely impressive.

Dunno on the abortion issue.

As to first female President - currently, the logical frontrunners (TMK) would be Hillary and Condy.  As between those two I think Hillary has a better chance.  I don't know of any other women considered serious contenders at this time.

In a more hypothetical context, my thought would be that the Democrats are much more likely to nominate a woman, which would make it more likely that the first female Prez would be Democrat.  On the other hand, I'm guessing that a Republican female nominee would have a better chance of getting elected.  This because women mostly vote Democrat, and if a significant number of female voters would cross party lines for gender loyalty, then the Republican female would stand to gain more than a Democrat.

BTW - my bets for next nominee, in order of likelihood:

Edith Brown Clement

Alice Batchelder

J. Michael Luttig

Don't know Mrs. Bush's opinion but didn't she used to be a Dem? I heard that somewhere...

Anyway, as far as the first woman president, it could be a Rep. Say Cheney gets indited, which is still somewhat possible, and he resigns. Unless I'm mistaken, which is also somewhat possible, Condi would be next up for VP. If she took that office and Bush died for some reason she'd be president. While all that is unlikely, it is possible. Bush and Co. is in there till 08, lots can happen in that amount of time....

I'd have to check, but I do not believe that the Secretary of State moves into the VP spot if the VP dies.  SecState is third in line, but that just means that she takes charge if GW and Cheney both die.  I believe that if the VP dies, GW appoints a new one, presumably with Senate approval.

Maybe somebody could check that...

Sorry for double post, but came across this fine quote.  Pretty cold-hearted.

"Let's move on," said Republican Sen. Trent Lott (news, bio, voting record) of Mississippi. "In a month, who will remember the name Harriet Miers?"

I thought the Speaker of the House would become the president if the VP died, was forced to resign, etc.

Who would want Dennis Hastert as president, though?

BTW:
When I first saw this thread, I thought the title was "Miers Quilts". I thought it had something to do with quilts.

And Funky, everyone's got it wrong. It's not "nuclear". It's not "nucular". It is, in fact, "noooklar."

If being a woman weren't a requirement Bush's top choice would probably Miguel Estrada.

I would prefer Janice Rogers Brown, but that's not likely to happen.
