Should I change jobs?  Stay as a patrol officer in a town that is 4 hours away from any family, or become a corrections officer in a town 1 hour from family?  Pay at the jail is less than that at the PD, but the cost of living is cheaper in the town of the jail.  What to do?
It sucks being antisocial alone.

to be honest i don't think we can really answer that for you. I think you've already made up your mind.

Does the cheaper cost of living roughly equate the drop in salary? If so then your getting 3 hours free a day. If not then you're paying for time with the folks and waens, and that's always a good investment.

I dont think we can give you any usable advice without figures. (which I won't ask for)

I will also be in the running for future Patrol jobs there form the jail.  there is good on both sides, but bad as well.

i'd never want to be a C.O., but that may also be because i'm from NY. I would stay with the patrol job and talk to someone about a transfer or something.

Out of curiosity, what do cops get paid down there, both on entry and at 3-5 years in?

Yup, he actually said that.

in New York it varies greatly. On long island, one suffolk county makes around 75-80 entry, 100k at 5 years in or so. One county over, its around 40 entry, probably 50-55 at 5 years in. Upstate counties are relatively low, although there is one that is the same as suffolk roughly, 75 or so entry and 100 or more after 5 years. As for Flurry, shows hes from North Dakota so i have no idea what they make out that way

edit- the best, and by best of course i mean worst, is NY City. Starting is around 25-30K and after 5 years its not a whole lot higher. So for less pay you can work in a virtual combat zone, and for higher pay in Suffolk you can deal with CONSIDERABLY less crime.

Its gonna depend on the town out here. We have a few bigger ones, but its primarily small towns.

I'd never be a C.O. Just imagine the things they witness on a day-to-day basis.

tough call. With there being benefits of both sides, no cut and dry solution presents itself.

seriously sit down and figure out the cost. is the drop in pay offset by the drop in travel costs? What about insurance and benefits? Whats the effect on your pension?

Then theres the stuff that can't be counted. Do you have kids? How old? If there's a monetary balance, or even if its close- that would have to weigh in.

I've got a few friends who are COs. One of the guys at my company works as a CO during the day and does billing and stuff for us on weekends and at night. He likes his work, but openly admits its tough. In terms of what goes on inside- as well as Corrections being a HIGHLY politicized work field. There's a lot of stuff going on internally that isn't quite kosher.

Old timers were collecting overtime pay for work that new guys did- since there was a cap on how much time they could do and be paid for it....that sort of thing.

G.I. Joe is absolutely correct with his assessment of the NYPD. My father in law was a beat cop in the Bronx for a lot of years before he got work as a firearms instructor and gunsmith, and he'll tell you the same thing in terms of getting paid and such. They're severely underpaid for the work they have to do.

I'm making about 18.00 an hour here.  With the corrections I would be making  base pay at 11.50, more depending if they count my 5 years of patrol.  Cost of living here is crazy.  The house I bought here for $105,000.00  would cost me about $70,000.00 in DL.  But then again I bought at a good time here, and will be able to get 150,000.00 for my house now.  The town i'm in now is in the middle of an oil boom, and everything is over priced.   So fit the most part we're dealing with a population that in increasing daily, with no homes for these people to move into.  Crime is on it's way up and the Brass don't seem to want to get us new /better /more equiptment or people.  The Brass dosn't care about holding onto expieranced people.  They can just hire new people.
As for the insurance, We pay 20% and don't have vison or dental.  In DL they have full insurance.  If I do get to the PD there, I would have to pay the 20% again, but would get the vison and dental.
There has also been alot of internal isues at the PD here...we have lost some good officers to other departments.  I won't go into details about all of that, but the PD just doesn't feel like family like it did just a year ago.
As for my retirement, I'll just get a check for what I have.  At that point I can pay it in at the next place, or spend it.
So, all of this attached to the idea that my wife hates the town we are in kinda makes this look like a sure deal.
As a patrol officer in town here I have helped the corrections staff with my prisoners.  I know that it isn't a pretty job,. but like I said, this is more of a stepping stone position.  The capt. at the jail and PD in DL know the job I want and know that i am licensed and won't have to have much training to fill a patrol slot.

Scotchy is right, my mind is made up for the most part.  I am excited, this is why I posted this.  I know that you guys will help pull me back so I can look around and make a better decision.

Sounds like you've already made a decision, and for good reasons.  You and your wife know yourselves best, and it seems like you've got good reasons.

Getting a job in Suffolk is near impossible though.  Most of the guys they take are experienced NYPD officers.

My town is in the same bracket as Suffolk.  Last time they hired, they had over 500 applicants for 8 spots.  So when they administered their test, they filled our high school parking lots, then had to park on the grass.  Those 8 guys got some cushy spots though.  Worst thing that happens here is serious car accidents, drunk drivers, and kids with pot.

This will in no way help you make your decision, but I'm posting here because two simultaneous job threads would be a waste.

I got a new job yesterday. Goodbye, dishland. Hello tech support!

Pariel- yeah suffolk is tough as all hell to get into. I'd apply to stay on a list while i'm on active duty but i really don't want to be around Long Island. Are you in NY?

Flurry, id say make the change then if you feel like thats the best thing. I can assume your in williston, and in that case things are only gonna remain in a downward spiral as more people move there (like me in around 4 months =P ).

Also, Best of luck Flurry.

I'm thinking seriously about getting into the paramedic service after I graduate this year. They have a program at Holland College in PEI for basic paramedic (1 year) and advanced paramedic (also 1 year, after). The job has appealed to me in many ways and my dad used to be in the ambulance service, my mother is an RN, and my sister is studying nursing in school, so medical is definitely in the family. I just think it's the right job for me.

I wonder how hard it would be to re-license as a paramedic from Canada to the U.S. if I ever decided to move back.
