I have to do this for a science project... And I have to figure out how Tippmann was able to make the paintballs for the flatline barrel backspin... and why making the paintballs backspin will make them go further... If you know please post to this fourm...

It creates a magnetic field, but not as great of one as the Super-Chromium's...

Like, how is the entire post that you wrote about a science project, yet the poll is about buying one?

backspin causes the friction of the balls surface against the air...this friction causes the ball to climb up, countering the effects of gravity, much like a slider (sinker? dont remeber) does in baseball

hope this helps a little, its kinda weak

and even that sucked.

the friction on the BARREL is what makes the balls spin. not the frickin friction (hehe, fun to say) of the air... where did that come from?

Stop lying to the kid...

EJP is full of crap.  The barrel creates a barometric field, not a magnetic field.  This field essentially creates an air balloon (or air cocoon, to be presise) and the ball floats in this cocoon until the field wears off.

Simple.

Magnetic field - puh-lease.

you guys all need to stop lying to him, look kid no one really knows HOW they work.  All we know is that Tippmann sodomizes lygers with them, normal barrel when it goes in, flatline with it comes out...don't question it.

They make is backspin from the curve in the barrel, and the rough texture of the bore somewhat grips the paintball to give it even more backspin, which equals more gravity-fighting and flat-trajectory effect.

I would assume thet the fast backspin creates differences in air pressure which helps the ball fight the effects of gravity.

I'm no scientist, I just know the barrel does shoot farther and flater and the backspin is the reason.

I will put this as simply and bluntly as possible ... I have three Tippmann markers, and I have Flatlines installed on two of them.

The third does not simply because it came with a Dye Boomstick, and I am using it exclusively for speedball (E-Bolt 98, shoots like a dream!!!)

I cannot play woodsball without a Flatline. When I try to use a non-Flatline equipped marker, I feel as though I am playing with a severe handicap.

Granted, it is not for everyone, but if you take the time to get to know how to set it up, how to utilize it, and have any concept as how to aim properly, the Flatline if an awesome upgrade ... PERIOD.

There is a lot of crap (bust balls, can't handle high ROF), and it is just that ... CRAP.

Ask anyone who has seen my guns in action.

I have a different experience, but it was with the A5 Flatline.

I bought it, and was not impressed after playing with it a few times....heck I wasn't even impressed when I test fired it.

Does it shoot far? Yes. Flat trjectory? Sure. Accuracy? That's debatable!

To me, it's just not accurate enough. Maybe it was just because it was the A5 version, maybe mine was defective(ask Kreeper-X), I don't know.

All I can say is that I have NEVER seen ANYBODY's flatline shoot as accurately as my LAPCO barrels or any other quality aftermarket barrel for that matter.

I mean, let's break things down. Accuracy is about consistency, that's just the way it is.

Consistency of paint, barrel, and air source are vital for utmost accuracy.

Now, we have all these awesome, standard aftermarket barrels with beatifully honed bores for a reason! The more flawless a bore is the less of a negative effect it will have on accuracy.

Now, the inside of the A5 Flatline looks like a nail file! I know it needs grip, and this makes it shoot far, but IME, this also creates accuracy issues.

One of my biggest issues with the Flatline is that the gun must be completely Uncanted in order to fire accurately...not the best characteristic for a player like me who loves to shoot on the run.

I'm not saying it busts balls or doesn't handle high ROF, because I have the RT on my A5 and never had a problem ripping without breaks...it's just not accurate enough for me, which is the reason i buy a barrel...to shoot a paintball with utmost accuracy, not utmost distance or flattest trajectory.

Awesome is relative...the distance and trejectory is kinda awe-insiring, but the accuracy kinda makes them more of a gimmick than characterisitcs of an effective long-range barrel, IMHO.

Personally, unless you see the flat trajectory as something you could use consistently, I think the Flatline is overrated.

Perhaps I have just become so accustomed to using a Flatline that I expect the shots to move a certain way, because I have no problems hitting what I aim at.

Plus, it blows minds when you turn your marker on it's side and curve a shot to get an elimination.

As stated, it's not for everyone, but too many people expect a miracle in a box and don't take the time to learn the nuances involved with using this barrel properly.

They can take my Flatlines when they pry them from my cold, dead hands.

Everyone else is free to use what they prefer.

Just for the record, I don't shoot garbage paint either.

The cheapest stuff I've ever bough was some ProBall that was on sale, and I was buying the real expensive stuff for the FL(Marbs, Stars).

My barrel was clean as could be, no worn down spots...I bought it new. It was installed correctly, and I gave it a fair chance....it just didn't work for me, and I could see a lot of players that would feel like I do if they paid $100 on a barrel that isn't effective.

There's a lot of little quirks to the barel that must be overcomed/learned in order to use it to the best of it's abilities, and even then they are still downsides that other barrels just don't have.

Basically, the Flatline does what it's advertised as doing, shooting farther and flater than any barrel that isn't a Flatline.

But those 2 awesome features also come with the bad....it's hard to clean, picky on paint, not accurate as other barrels, and can't be fired in anything but an upright position.

For me, those negatives are just something i coudn't deal with, and I didn't find the positive features all that overwhelming or efective.

I just kinda get tired of Flatline fans claiming if you don't like it, you did something wrong!

The fact is the barrel is for a very specific type of player, and I guess I had to find out the hard way($100) that I was not a Flatline type of player.

Yeah, it all comes down to using what you prefer.

But for me, I bought the A5 Flatline and noticed a lot of bad things that the fans seem unwilling to mention, so I would feel bad if I just stayed quiet and didn't speak my mind, and some poor dude wastes his $100 on the same mistake I did.

Not using that as a crutch, but I know far too many people who have had excellent results with the Flatline, and helped too many people at fields troubleshoot theirs that had alignment or seating problems (primarily on the 98 version) to rule operator malfunction out of the equasion. Granted, the mounting system on the A-5 makes it basically idiot proof, but sometimes crap DOES happen ...

I have put some real garbage paint (1 1/2 years old, some of it!!), and never had the problems some people claim to experience.

I agree, and have stated it more than once in this thread. That is what makes us individuals .... different wants/needs/preferences. It keeps things from getting stale!!

the barrels friction makes give the ball backspin, BUT!!! the backspin allows the suface of the ball to climb slightly (yet countered by gravity, so a relatively flat trajectory) in flight due to the friction against the air

and yeah, the baseball thing is true, its the friction of the laces on the air, but i dont remeber what pitch it is (the one that doesnt drop so fast...whatever one that is)

good luck with your project
