    Posted: 08 April 2010 at 8:07am
In college my favorite class I took was an elective called entrepreneurship. This class was amazing as it really opened the students minds to making money in an unconventional way. Typically if you want to buy something you have to go get a job... Save up, and when you have enough then go buy it. So people wait to chase their dreams as they think they have to have _______ before they can start...

This class changed the way many of the participants think about money as it forced them to realize that money isn't just something that allows you to buy something. It can also be viewed as seeds.

And the more seeds you plant, the more money you can get back as you harvest those seeds.

I have always been interested in buying and selling stuff (I've had the "Free Enterprise" moniker since I was 16). I used to dumpster dive in grade school for stuff to sell in class. I went to Woodward BMX camp with a worn out bike, two bags of homemade cookies and $30. I left two weeks later with a brand new top of the line bike, tons of stickers (currency in the BMX world) and $300... All from trades I had made. One trade involved over 30 people and I had the entire trade figured out before I started the first deal. I did the whole trade with everyone involved in under 4 hours. (it took about a week to plan it all, and get verbal agreements with all parties)

I always had some money making project going. When I was 8 I was selling about $30 a week in toothpicks... that I would soak in flavors at home and sell in class. Cinnamon, wintergreen, and spearment. 3 for $.25 or 15 for $1.00. Just about every kid in school could be seen with a toothpick hanging out of their mouths.

I also started a lawn mowing service, painted numbers on curbs, sold candy, and was designing and printing t-shirts to pay for my "fun" money in college.

My birthday was a few weeks ago, and I got cash... Like most people who instantly think, "what can I buy". I thought the same thing, except my thought had a little more...

"What can I buy that I can sell, and double this money"!

So I turned that $60 into $90 in the two two weeks since, and I got to thinking. The reason that class was so good, was that we were forced into taking some of our own money and figuring a way to make money from it...

The teacher turned it into a contest. Whoever got the highest return won, and would have bragging rights.

And, man was everyone competitive to see who could "make" the most in the next two months.

Each person had to keep track of their expenses, and their profits. You were allowed to use investors, as long as you paid them back what they put in, with their promised profit.

Who ever made the most cash by the end won.

Does the T&O forum want to play?

If you want in, just post on this thread. Personally, I am going to start with $30. Because everyone can come up with $30 to mess with pretty easily. I plan on trying to make a minimum of $300 off of this $30 in the next two months. I have some idea's and I will be watching craigslist for deals that I can "turn" for a quick profit.

Nothing illegal, and keep track of all your expenses, as they come out of your profit. (just like the real world).

Some ideas are...

make and sell some artwork, food, candy, detail auto's, cut grass, paint, make a product and sell it, find something you know about on craigslist and sell it, or offer your fixing services to your friends, wash windows... The key is to make a profit and do the work yourself, or hire people to do it for you.

but, you have to document on this thread, each purchase and what you did to it. If you purchased something years ago, and now you want to sell it, you can, but the original cost goes against your profit... unless you got it for free.

Shoot, look at the garbage on the side of the road... I've found all kinds of stuff that I have sold there over the years.

So, I bring you the T&O CASH challenge.

Who is in?

I'm not particularly entrepreneurial, so I invest my money in the work of others.

Interesting concept though, and I hope to see some people get onboard to see where this goes.

Yup, he actually said that.

I took entrepreneurship in highschool too actually, was a decent class. We had a small store set up in the school that sold basic school supplies, clothing with the school stuff on it, noisemakers for games, etc. People in the class would have scheduled times to be there and whatnot.

I almost got suspended in middle school for competing with the school store.

I had a paper route at the time so I was making about $40/week doing that. I would take that money and buy candy in bulk, your usual assortment of candy bars and chewables. Then I would sell it out of my locker for around half the absurd price the school store was selling, while still making a tidy profit. My only expense was the candy, no transportation costs since I huffied it to school and bought the candy on the way.

Eventually the principal and various clubs that got funded by the school store noticed a drop in funds and they investigated. Needless to say they found out I was dealing in the worst drug of all, sugar, at better prices so they called a meeting with my parents, the principal and I and threatened me with suspension if I didn't stop.

That sucked. I made a good profit off that stuff.

Later in college I bootlegged DVDs for $3 each. The only expense in that was a 3/time netflix subscription at $15 a month. I also bought booze for my entire floor and then some once a week and taxed that so I could drink for free and still make money on my time.

College was much less legal than my earlier dabbelings.

I'm in on the contest I just need to brainstorm to come up with ideas.

Don't blame me, I voted for Kodos.

I could have made bank over the years if had I charged my friends for every single time I had to fix their computers.  I guess my liberal commie mindset was dominant even before I realized.

As far as the game goes, it seems like a fun idea, but totally not worth it, IMO.  If you make $300 in a month, that's what, at best around $10/hr and probably even less than that?  I'm good with how I spend that time now.

How much do you make now per hour? And what are your expenses now?

This is money ON top of that money, so it goes directly to the bottom line without costs associated, as they are already covered in your regular income.

Years ago the statistic was over 80% of people spend their entire paycheck with their costs each pay period.

So a minimal increase in cash monthly would equal a pretty big deal.

If you could make an EXTRA $300 per month, on top of your regular pay and costs... That would be a big deal, almost like getting a second job, as it would be pretax income. No SS medicare, or taxes taken out as this is discretionary income.

For example, I saw this on craigslist...

Now, there ain't no way that is worth $160... And GT didn't make the pro performer until 1984. (I know because I had one..., it was also called a World Tour that year and 1985).

So I called him up and asked if he was serious about selling it... The highest I would go is $50. He said, yeah, he wanted to sell it now, and I headed over there.

When I got there I was bummed, the only real part was the frame... Everything else was new garbage mongoose... (or walgoose as I call it, cause old mongooses are good).

So, I offered him what it was worth $20. and we settled on $25.

That left me $5. to buy more stuff. Picked up some Oxalic acid, (aka wood bleach) to fix this frame up... $1.00 at lowes. Bought a bag of candy which I will sell in my candy machine ($2.00 from yard sale this summer).

Yeah, I can hear you now... That bike is all rusty and worthless... Well, this one is in very good condition for being a 1988 GT Pro Perfomer / Pro Freestyle Tour.

Well worth decent money on ebay. I would guess it is worth about $75 minimum, just as a frame. ($50 profit!, which would double my investment).

Here it is during the oxalic acid bath.

Here are the results... Pre polished...

DO NOT use steel wool on chrome, it will just scratch the chrome and make it look bad. Oxalic acid is the only way, and you just mix it up, and let it soak for hours. So there is no work involved until you wipe it down with a white scotch brite pad.

Time on project so far.

Picking up the bike (I was out that way anyway...)

15 minutes.

strip down bike to frame, 10 minutes.
Making up the oxalic acid mixture and putting frame in it 10 minutes.

changing frame position during day and whiping off rust.

15 minutes.

Cost in project $26.

Now, I will take good photographs, and get the ebay listing ready. This typically takes about 30 minutes total. I think I will list it on Wed, 10 day auction to end on the following Saturday, for best results.

Oh, and some of my old friends had a get together on the west coast...

Old school style.
