Why u gotta h8? Lemme axe you this: what would it take to successfully pull off a bowler? In relatively casual wear.

Lambchops and a p-coat. Full suit is optional.

Meh. Facial hair is out. If you can't tell from the pic, wiry goat stubble is the best I can muster. I'm about to lop that off. I do like pea coats, but I'm leaning more towards Western, methinks. I am Texan.

In casual wear? A time machine. DO NOT DO IT otherwise. Don't be one of those clowns that just ruins a good thing. The fedora is a beautiful hat, but guys like the picture up higher have just ruined them. Wearing them with ugly short sleeve button ups, khakis and skechers... You'll have to be a very dapper gentleman in a rather nice suit, attending something befitting of the attire in order to pull off the bowler. Doing it casually you might as well just spraypaint "awkward" on your chest and wear that instead. Seriously, don't do it, for mankind everywhere. |

Point accepted. I believe I have the ability to clean up nicely, so I suppose I can keep it to formal if necessary. That said, I like high quality hats, so would you be able to recommend I hat I could actually wear on the town? I'd be willing to dress to meet it, but I would like to keep it reasonably casual.

A good newsboy cap would be my suggestion. I have a couple friends with them and they're quite nice/ look good, even casually (provided you're not a total neckbeard when casual)

Or do what makes you happy, even if it makes you look like a dork. I think my way's a bit more mentally healthy, even if it can be, as I put it in the chatroom, a lady repellent.

So I take it I was the subject of conversation in chat? Good, then I'm doing my job. Look, here's the thing, I have a desire to do what I want, world be damned. Otherwise, I wouldn't have bought a bowler. However, I tend to let other people's opinions affect me too much. I'm trying to break away from that. I think I will use this hat as a social litmus test. If you are somehow put off by my hat, then I'd rather not have anything to do with you. Sure, quirky people can be socially awkward, but isn't that really the point? I tend to find normalcy boring. So go ahead, wear a bowler with a T-shirt. Why not?

Since the conversation turned serious...
I'd say wear what you want, but I tend to agree with Choop. Fedoras were part of an era where men prided themselves in dressing fancy and if you wear it out of context it just doesn't work. This isn't a matter of looks, you look better dressed nice regardless. It's just that the clash inspires dissonance...like wearing a pair of dress slacks with an old AC DC shirt. Or wearing a hippie bandana with a tuxedo. Or a backwards cap with anything. |

I have a habit of supporting dissonance, though. I teach in slacks, shirt/tie, and either checkboard Vans or fluorescent-orange Nike high tops.

Well, I am starting to wonder who I need to impress. I have a good job that makes good money, I play guitar, I have several motorcycles, I enjoy going out and doing things, I longboard and play paintball. If you think I'm awkward or no fun, and won't take the time to say hi because my hat is out of place, sucks for you. Yeah, I think I like my hat.
