Picked up and "old" model 98 and a custom 98. Both have the same problem: Shooting multiple balls per shot. I have disassembled and the ball latch is not missing and is in place. Any ideas?

If the ball latch is worn it could still allow balls to get past even if it is in place. As this is an older marker I would start with a new ball latch.

does the gun fire one solid shot, and other balls come rolling out? i had this problem with my 98 and all it took was replacing the ball detent. get a universal parts kit for 10$ and give it a try. while you're at it, not a bad time to replace the o-rings and give her some oil and a cleanin!
