So I'm turning 18 soon and need some opinions on what type of gun I should buy. I'm limited to Rifles and Shotguns. Shotguns also can't be pistol grip. Lets put the price cap at $1,000.

Well, hand's down Benelli is the best shotgun maker out there. Price cap at 1,000? Let's see...I finally went back to firefox 1.5 so I should be able to Hyperlink.. http://www.benelliusa.com/ The Legacy is in my opinon, their sexist shotgun...just look around, they aren't "over-priced" however much you pay, is what you get. Only shotgun I would goto would be a Mossberg..

For overall versatility, I suggest a shotgun... I agree somewhat with tippmania.   Benelli operates under the umbrella of the premier (and incidentally the oldest) gun manufacturer in the World... Beretta.   Besides Benelli, other members of the Family include Stoeger and Sako.

The higher end Berettas share the same action as the higher end Benellis.   Although I do have a couple pump guns, a Side X Side and a couple over/unders...  since this action is pretty much bullet proof, I see no reason not to shoot a Semi-Auto.

In your range, I would suggest a Beretta Xtrema 1 (or Model 391).   Go with a 12 ga chambered in 3.5" for maximum versatility.   You will be able to shoot anything from 2.75" target to 2.75" Game Loads to 3" Magnum Duck loads to 3.5" T-Shot for Geese.

If your budget allows a little more, go with an Xtrema 2 or the Benelli Super Black Eagle 2.   The problem with the SBE2 is that they are difficult to find in anything other than a gloss finish which is fine for Sporting Clays and Skeet, but is a little blingy for the duck blind.

It is a tradition in my family to present every male that turns 16 with a shotgun.   Shotguns usually stay with their owner for life... so don't skimp... buy something you will cherish forever.

Remington Model 700 BDL, Browning A-Bolts are awesome guns, Any .17 caliber rifle, theyre really fun to toy with and to shoot small game. I have a benelli nova pump gun, very nice shotgun. All those are way under a grand.

I like my Mossburg 12Ga with rifled barrel. Accurate beyond 100yds. Funny you bring this up, I've been itching to go shooting again.

Are you buying a gun just for the sake of being 18 and wanting one? How much do you know about guns? Picking out of rifles and shotguns is pretty broad.
